Thanks for the replays. If you know what are the differences in the 88 frame vs. the 87. Also I'm not aware or been told of any legal frame swap. Can you explain what these might be for CA.

frames usually have the same ser# as the body so how are you going to register it as you are putting 2 different vehicles together. let's look at it this way. you have title to you 60-66 and put a newer frame under it and let it go at that. you sell he vehicle to someone else. they get in a serious accident or somehow else the vehicle gets inspected and someone runs the frame nbr and it belongs to someone else. this will cause someone great grief as it will be more than likely impounded or lack of insurance coverage as it is not a legal vehicle.

Here in Kansas, in most cases, you go to the DMV, have a State Trooper run the numbers on your body and the frame. If both check out ok, then your options are: a builders' title, or transferring the body number to the frame,with the proper paperwork attached. Also, in some cases the state can assign a new ID number and will attach it in the door jamb. KS seems to normally lean towards titling as the body year. If all your paperwork is done correctly, there are no insurance issues. Proper documentation, may be lengthy, but in the end, well worth it.

I have a 2003 that I've been tempted to put my '66 Burb body on.

Somehow that seems silly. The idea of owning an old truck gets lost in that.

At the same time, I look at crate engines and all new supension parts for the '66.

I would still rather have an all original nice '66, than a resto-mod. As soon as I see changed "anything" in a 4-sale ad, I lose interest quickly. Probably because none of what someone else has done, would be what I would do, so I don't want to pay for it.

The '88 and up frames are much wider, as well as the side profile is much different. The front suspension is totally different, and I believe the wheelbase may be different as well. Most anything can be done if a guy has the desire and the skills to make it happen. But IMO swapping to the '88 and up frame is way too much work, for basically no real gain over the early frame and suspension. In fact I have yet to see a 2wd swap like this ever get finished. Usually they give up on the project due to the difficulty. I have only seen one finished that was a 4x4.

To keep a frame swap legal, check with your DMV or State Police to see what is required in your state, or just read thru the link Ron posted above.
