Fair price on 700r4 installed?

I ran a 4l60e ( same as 700) with 3.08's, it did lug especially around the 40-65 MPH range.

I now have 3.73 gears, MPG has improved around 4 MPG on the HWY, and around 2MPG in town/mixed. BTW, I have 28" tires.

I like how it is responsive in the lower RPM's now also.

If it was me, I would put the 700 in, with the plan to replace the rear gears when you can with 3.73's. Your MPG will suffer a bit, but this will start the process for your truck to be more drive-able and enjoyable too.

What you guys are missing is the engine torque/trans/tire diameter/ .....One needs to look at the rpms the engine will be turning and by adding the engine into the equation and the tire size then calculating the torque to the ground one can see how the combination will work. If you only look at the speed and rpms you will still not know how it will work. Torque within a usable range of speed is the only thing that will tell you if it will pull or if it will fall on its face........If any of you want to see how that works, send me the following information in a private message and I will send you a spread sheet that shows the pertinent information. Here is what I need:

1. engine (hp and max rpm) at least which engine it is...

2. transmission

3. rear axle ratios

4. rear tire diameter (height from ground to top of rear tire in inches)

5. your e mail address (this is not a fishing scheme I just do not know how to send a excell spreadsheet any other way)

In some of the earlier examples one person said the 3:08 did not work and another guy said it was great, the engine and how much torque it produces would make one combination work and another not work, so that is why calculating the torque before you make the changes is a better way to go so your do not waste any money........Kieth

I have a 3.08 gear with a turbo 400 trans behind my 350 and it still whines at 60MPH! I have a 700 R4 that I plan to have rebuilt and install. I'm also being told that the driveshaft needs to be shortened and cross member modified. New member, new to the forum. 66 Chevy SWB fleetside.

That's a good price, especially enticing for the warranty. You'll spend every bit of $1,200 doing it yourself (depending on rebuild cost) and will be out your time and money too if it burns up. If your time is more valuable than the difference, go for it!

Thanks Leevon, I started the order a few weeks ago and they said it should be delivered sometime late this week. I had a thought about the lens indicator on the steering column knowing it will need to be replaced with the Overdrive Indicator lens. I called the shop today and they already have that waiting for me included in the price. Really looking forward to it!
