Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
Damn !!! I looked at some of the older posts, and shake my head as to why the insurance companies don't want you to install a roll bar. Makes absolutely no sense !!

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
I've never had s insurance company tell Me not to have a roll bar in my blazer. It's well worth having one. I feel much safer now that I installed one.

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
Here's a bit of trivia ! The insurance company calls it a roll bar if it's attached to the frame of the vehicle. If it's only fastened to the body, they call it an "appliance" bar and most companies will allow it. Stupid if you ask me.

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
I guess that does make a difference then. So it's like having a light bar on the back of a pickup. At least in their eyes.

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
I don't know what it's like in the US, but here in Canada, specifically Ontario, it seems the safer you build a vehicle the tougher the laws and rules are against you. If you put disc brakes on a vehicle originally equipped with drums, now your vehicle is seen as being modified and your insurance rates go up. Put a late model engine in, which has way better fuel economy and pollutes 99% less, again, it's now modified. Too many people making rules that have no clue about the real world. Rant over.

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
Several years ago, I responded to a rollover of a 90's era Corvette convertible.
We rolled up just in time to view several people (attempting to help) flipping the car back onto it's wheels. There was one occupant (driver), and no roll bar on the Corvette. Was not a pretty site at all. Makes me a firm believer in roll-bars. My Jimmy build will have one! Pat |

Some depressing pics. Roll bars are a good idea.

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
My 68 longhorn tow truck has a bar I installed and tied into the frame mostly because of the wooden bed. combo'd it up with the light bar. Heavy duty lumber rack on my other 68 GMC and working on another on my 69 GMC

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
A whole lot of yikes! in these pictures. After seeing them there is no way I would run a K-Blazer without roll protection. I would be fine with a two wheel drive Blazer without though, believing in my head there is a whole lot less chance of rolling one of those.

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
The guy that works for me had a jacked up K/5 several years ago.....he got hit from behind and flipped it over frontwards......
flattened the body and top level to the ground.....trapped him inside with only minor injuries.... smashed the top flat....not a single window in the top got broken... matter of fact...he just gave me all 3 windows....rubber still intact on the side windows

Re: So this is what a rolled K5 looks like
A roll bar bolted to the floor can save your life in most circumstances. It can also make a rollover only a laid on it's side. Iy all depends of the forces involved. But probably a good 75% better than how the factory rolled them out with nothing. I have laid one over with my family riding. My wife broke her leg. I had a roll bar. This was a hiway accident, got tapped and sent into a sweeping j-turn into the ditch to the right, stopping with the R/F tire starting up the bank and L/R in the low point. No top and no one was tossed. The windshield got racked, L/F fender mashed, and some dents same side. It was repaired and I carried on with it for five more years.
I flipped a '95 K2500 on it's lid after going airborne over a Taurus from a hard side punch. The ladder rack bolted to the body acted as a roll bar
