Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
Played with the wheels this evening, unfortunately Chevy caps are all I have.
Once this thing comes down some it will look a lot better.

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
So, I am reluctant to run down to the parts store and pick up parts till I know exactly what year frame/suspension I have. Unfortunately, in 1966 the partial vin is not stamped on the frame where chevy trucks put a stamp (looking down at top of frame rails inside engine bay) There is however a frame part # under each door on the side of the frame. Very easy to find and read. I would GREATLY appreciate it if you - or anyone else who has a '64-72 GMC leaf type would post a picture or just write the frame # they see on the side of frame/under each door. It would resolve a ton of questions as I need lots of suspension work.

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
I have been looking for this number for quite some time. It would be great if u could take a picture too. If I have same frame as u it would be very helpful. GMC is less common and sometimes a challenge to get parts. For me, its identifying the year of my frame first.
I dont know if u have gotten into yet but our trucks do not have Vin stamped on frames. Your truck is rare and cool C/10. |

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
Back to your truck, C/10. I have never seen '66 GMC dog dish caps for sale. And new Chevy caps are $300. Have you ever looked into buying those circular GMC stickers (decals) to stick over the bowtie name?
Looking forward to your feedback on frame part# . The number on driver's side will prob be diff than passenger side. Possibly addressing R vs L. Or, one side built a different date. |

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
Why not get the front suspension from a 73 up and the rear end and convert to 5 lug wheels and front disk brakes? the rear leaf springs on the GMC makes the swap to 5 lug easy. I prefer the GMC to the Chev . My two daily drivers are 66 GMC,s.

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
Thanks C10. Seems my mystery will continue. My frame begins with 2443630 on driver's side. Ends in 31 on passenger side.
If you look at thread 47575 you'll see the same number that I show although we're not the same after that. So, I'm not sure what GMC was up to. My frame could be 65 or ??? Thanks for checking and getting back. Perhaps someone else with a GMC will be able to help. Old Truck Man you could get in on this if you so desire. BTW, it does seem GMC begins with 24---. Chevy's seem to begin with "3". |

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
Still haven't lowered it yet, but I gave the front a little CLR bath and slapped on a rear bumper, some black OG license plates with era correct GMC/Pontiac frames.

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
since we both have 66 GMCs, I have a couple more questions C/10 King. Do u have a sm318 Muncie trans or a saginaw with synchro's? Do u have a dana 44 rear end? (354)). Does it leak around pinion seal? Do u get any vibration in steering? Obviously I have these probs. A mechanic said my pinion bearing is going bad and may be causing vibration. A new joint and wheel bearing pack with new seals had no effect on vibration. Many things it could be.
The petina on ur truck looks sharp. I like the white wall size too. FWIW, my driver' door fits like yours. I originally thought it was bad body work during a restoration, but I have seen others with same fit. (Slightly out top right corner; slightly out bottom left corner). Most likly came that way. |

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
I wish our GMC looked this nice! We have a similar '66 BBW SWB that came with power steering and brakes. I haven't seen many GMC's with your combination.

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
Turbohound. It is rare to see a gmc with ps and pb. I wonder if either option were added or if factory original? if you have a 1966, I would be curious to see what air cleaner you have. Also I would like to see a picture of your power brake booster and master cylinder if you have one. I have power steering but I can only get an oil bath cleaner on Rochester 1 barrel carburetor. If you have a v6 then you will not have the same problem. I am also seeking frame part numbers to determine what year frame I have. If u back up on this thread, you'll see the frame numbers that C10 King and I swapped.

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
As near as I can tell it is factory ps and pb. They certainly have the wear and were under a good half inch of dirt. Don't hate me (or hate if you must), but both were in too rough shape for me to use. There were only four threads left on the drag link. I can't tell you what came on top of the 351 V6, because the engine was also not running and was missing the carb and air filter. I have a 327 SBC sitting in the garage so I wanted something that wasn't running to put the engine into. It's sad that a truck this rare was taken care of so poorly.
The drivers frame has the number 2491529 160 1 6 1 Passenger side is 2491530 7 23 160 1 |

Re: Couldn't pass this 66 SB GMC up
Thanks Turbohound. This is very helpful. it appears I have a power booster and master cylinder from a 1970 or later truck or car. It also appears that my frame is not from 1966. Unless a fenderside and fleetside have a different part number. My truck was an early 66 so it might be a frame from 65. For future readers, it looks like the first seven numbers are the same (driver side ends in 29: pass side ends in 30) between you and C10. After that the numbers are still a mystery. Since GMC from that period did not stamp partial vins on frame (like chevy) the only info we can make sense of are the part numbers. You and C-10 have matching #s which is probably good evidence you're both on original fleetside frames Enjoy your truck. I loved those 327's. Knowing that my truck is not original, I wouldn't hesitate to put in a sb. Have fun and please share your project.
Im betting you have an original power booster and single barrel mc. Thanks for adding to the archives. If you still have 6 lug wheels dont be quick to get rid of your rear drums. Theyre diff on a 66 GMC than a chevy. |
