Re: Front suspension drop failure
My springs shipped yesterday. (was originally estimated for Nov. 2nd) Anyone else get these and cut them yet? I did a flip kit in the rear and was wondering if I should start with 1 coil or go a little more. The back is sitting pretty low.
Ive got CPP drop spindles up front so far, and whatever the cut springs give me. This picture is before I did anything up front & just finished the rear flip. |

Re: Front suspension drop failure
Usually 1/2 coil= 1" of drop.
1 coil = 2" of drop. 1-1/2 coils= 3" of drop. Be conservative on the cutting. I never cut more than 1-1/2 coils.

Re: Front suspension drop failure
With those summit racing 1-ton coils, I cut off about an inch less than 1 1/2 coils. The free standing height was 11 15/16" after I was done trimming. Here it is now.
Note that my truck is a V8 with air so it maybe heavier than others.

Re: Front suspension drop failure
I cut one coil off the 1-ton springs, and am using 3-inch spindles.

Re: Front suspension drop failure
Cutting coils in MODERATION is fine, HEATING coils is a big no-no. The OP went off the deep end, with no research obviously, and whacked 2 coils...that will never work...inner fenders or not. The internet is a great thing, you can research anything pretty quick and determine the best way to approach most anything (much of which has been covered on this board a billion times).

Re: Front suspension drop failure
So does that mean you have 29 sets of springs you need to get rid of?
You should be able to offer them to the board if they are no longer available. I received mine two days ago, HEAVY box!

Re: Front suspension drop failure
Not sure about our trucks, but on many vehicles, 1.0" spring movement is around 1.7" at the wheel. So, if cutting 2 coils shortens the spring by 3" (just a guess here), that results in 5" at the wheel. However, the spring gets stiffer with fewer coils, so the net result may be closer to 4" at the wheel. I know many guys don't take those facts into consideration when whacking springs. Edit: I just read a post above saying it's a 1:2 ratio. Even more than I thought!
Still haven't decided how to lower my truck, but am leaning towards aftermarket springs designed for 2"-3" drop AT THE WHEEL. And the ride should be less bone-jarring than with cut coils. My truck has 8" rally wheels, and it sounds like most, if not all, dropped spindles won't clear them. True?

I put McGaughys MMC-33153 from Summit on mine and they clear my 8 inch rallies just fine. I thought i was going to have to trim them but lucked out I guess.

These springs were sent with a certificate worth $20.00 on my next buy over $100.00 from Summit Not bad for some 8.00 springs! These new springs seem to be much heaver than the stock springs?
