Re: 3rd Brake Light Ideas - Photos Please

In my build this would be bolted to the back of the cab under the rear window. Damn that looks original!

No, I just swiped it from post number 21 in this thread. The photos on the site are a bit odd but it looks like this is the one. https://www.rodworx.com/shop/flush-m...license-light/

You would have to disconnect or cover the white light on the bottom that they have for the license plate.

I wonder if the white light would be bright enough to wire it separately as a sort of cargo light? Granted, it wasn't designed for that but maybe it would have some value. It's not like I'm ever going to carry much back there but an EZ-Up, cooler and maybe a couple folding chairs

I am sure it would be better than nothing, good idea.

There have to be other ones that might mount above the rear window on the outside where you could run the wire in behind the dome light using that hole for access.

I should have the one I ordered by the end of the week and may be able to stick it up in the back window of one of my cabs and take a photo or two.
I would like to see this one also! Just bought a new AAW wiring harness and it includes 3rd brake light wire.

Re: 3rd Brake Light Ideas - Photos Please

My Buddies 3rd brake light is one of those billet units that has a screw on movable base that is screwed to the panel below the window.

The seat back hides it and it real close to the glass , The limo tint is cut around the unit and his license sticker plate in the lower left of the window.
Sticker plate ? Ya he has the big 1955 license plates .

Re: 3rd Brake Light Ideas - Photos Please

My window will be a dark but not limo - too dark for me.

I had a small window '57 I had to sell during my divorce of 18 years ago. Always wanted a big window and got one. Now I almost miss the small window because they scream "old" truck. We're NEVER satisfied, are we?!

Re: 3rd Brake Light Ideas - Photos Please

I prefer the small window , heck no rear window even .
After all as a vanner since the 60's I haven't had rear windows in my vans at all.
Heck I even limo tinted our Tahoe.
Gee , even our Tundra has 3 sheets of tinted glass between me and the road behind . Good thing it has a rear camera .
It's all done with mirrors LOL

OK I'm done now , back to 3rd brake lights ! BTW did you notice the high mounted 3rd brake light on the Tundra .... OK now I'm done ...

Re: 3rd Brake Light Ideas - Photos Please

how about using one you can attach with 2 sided tape to the window on the inside, up high for visibility (and that is where most people will be looking for a 3rd brake light). that way the wires can be run in the inner roof panel and be hidden for the most part and the tape will hide the reflective light from the glare off the glass.
I am using an led light from a cavalier with the trunk spoiler but mine is mounted into the roof from the outside, some sheetmetal work required.

Dan I think that white tape is just the peel off protector for the adhesive. Bet it's black underneath. I like that one too.

Re: 3rd Brake Light Ideas - Photos Please

If the white tape is actually white, and not just a white protective layer, there was another plastic light there which could be installed with some 3M adhesive tape. VHB tape is used for bonding items to glass and there are two different types available in black. We use a version of this to attach cameras to windshields and it really is a permanent installation if you follow directions. Downside is that it's not cheap and you also need a primer to make it work. https://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotch-595...s=3m+vhb&psc=1

I've not seen anyone else do this yet.

What is the light fixture you used? Name and part number if you have it would be a HUGE help. How are you making the electrical connection between the tailgate and bedsides?

Just checked Mar-K. It doesnt show a tailgate with a built in 3rd light for '55-'57. Maybe its only for Fleetside trucks??

Here is an idea I saw on my buddies 51 AD. LED and flashes about a 1/3 of the light for a turn signal and also lights all across for brake.

you could mount an s10 blazer/suburban light on the top rail of the box behind the cab. they are made to screw down and they are bright led. picknpull has lots for cheap so you could try it with 2 sides tape to see if you like it.
