I am about to place an order for this stuff, dont have the slightest idea how well it works, but sounds easier to work with and is a weld through primer. http://www.picklex20.com/ Seems to be a bit less costly than Por15 also. Below is the pricing thay sent me.

Note : Any ordinary plastic spray bottle can be used for spraying. The coverage shown are the estimate of application by simultaneously spraying and brushing by a paint brush. Only one coat is needed (on bare metal, the cost of the product comes out to be few cents per sq.ft.). Shelf life of Picklex®20 is more than 3 years after opening.

I just sprayed por15 on my friends k-5 and then we put undercoting on top of it. It sprays well but stinks alot make sure you have lots of room. we put it to the test about a week later and many mud holes later just sprayed it off. put the truck on the lif and inspected the underside and nothing came off so i guess it will work. just my .02

I know this isn't going to help much, without the name, but before POR-15 I used this stuff from Autozone, Checkers, or any of the local parts stores. It goes on an off white, but as it cures, it turns black. you can paint over it, and it is a rust encapsulator. I will see if I still have some in the cabinet tonight and get you the name. I have used POR15, and you need to be prepared to do the whole area once you start. POR 15 does not stick to itself very well if you stop, then comeback later to finish, i.e overlapping the finished area; it will peel off.

70 longbed, that sounds like the stuff we called Vactan when I was in the Navy. That stuff worked great in the bilges of a submarine (which stayed full of salt water).

Good question! That may have made a difference, but I think that the POR is looking for that metal surface to bond to.

On the inside floors we prime with Rustoleum Rusty metal primer, (heavy coat so that it soaks in) and then seal the seams with butyl rubber.

For the finish coat in the floor we use Rustoleum Gray as it helps for seeing what you are assembling. This is a picture of a Burb floor as the primer is not dry on the cab. We brush the paint on coating it very heavy.

OK, I just ordered a lot of POR-15 from wdz28 or I cant remember his name from UT......We'll see how well I can handle the process. I will be doing all the tinwork in my S10.

what exactly is butyl rubber and where do you get it? what makes it so special?

Keith,

I will get the name of the material. It comes in a caulk tube and it is a roofing product for sealing seams. It is a very good product and will hold up for years outside. It cures to a soft pliable rubber and it sticks very well. It is paintable and it comes close to the original seam material that is on the floor so you can duplicate the bead.

Turned out great. It's only being a few months since I did this, so I can't tell

i bought a quart of rust bullet on ebay. it goes on good but way to soon to tell if it works. just 2 coats and that is it. nothing else, like with the pors products. look on ebay you can save a few bucks buying on there.

Here is a picture of the sealant that we use. We refer to it as a butyl sealant, (it has butyl in it), but it is a polyurethane as can be seen from the pic. We get it through the industrial roofing suppliers. I am not sure where else it would be available.

Just finished reading a good article on this in the November 2003 of Auto Restorer. They did a test comparison between POR-15 ands eastwoods Rust Encaspulator...If I can get my scanner to jump start I'll post the article. It was interesting reading and I was kind of surprised at some of the comments. Both seem to work, but the author tends to go or recommend the Eastwood product.

I am having my cab sprayed with line-x ! I feel that for the money it will be the best route for my 4x4 project. Rocks being flung up all the time !

I an also having the interfenders done also, and the bottom of the bed will also be done. My freind works at line-x and he is going to put a thin coat on for me! It will probally run me about $300 for everything !
