Re: Pulling motor question
I helped a buddy with a square body using this method and it gave us enough to get the motor and trans in.

Re: Pulling motor question
I put a 305 V-8 in a '72 Chevy Vega many years ago. I took the hood off, and four of us used a steel bar to lift the engine off the ground and set it in the engine compartment...NO hoist. I had already removed the front tire and wheel assemblies and set the lower a-arms on 2 by 4s. We damned near lost it, because the guys on one side were a little weaker, and the chain started to slide on the lifting bar. Good times!

Re: Pulling motor question
Well, at least it’s back in. Not too difficult, even by yourself.

Looks nice! How deep did you go? A complete rebuild, or?

Just rings, honing. We will see how it turns out, hopefully it will run well.

Re: Pulling motor question
The transmission rolled off the jack under the truck. Now I gotta figure out how to get the trans back on the jack. Damn, that thing is heavy.
How do I do this by myself? Wouldn’t be so bad if I could do it out from the truck, but then I can’t get the truck high enough to roll it under.

Re: Pulling motor question
I’m just going to have to make a cradle. That trans just tips side to side; won’t sit straight.
And then, I gotta figure out how to get it under the truck.

If you can slide it under the truck then tip/roll it onto the jack, you could probably strap it to the jack to keep it from tipping over.

Re: Pulling motor question
I tried that, laying on the ground under the truck, trying to muscle a super-heavy trans. Forget it! I could not do it. I'm just not strong enough and there's no way to get leverage. Need at least two people to do that.

Re: Pulling motor question
I was thinking a 8” pipe, cut in half, welded to the jack. But, where would I find a piece like that? And the cost?
Then, maybe some cheap scrap bars of steel running in a bee?

Ya its definitely not an easy thing to do. Maybe you could run a strap around the frame rails or something then cradle the trans. Then use a ratchet strap or possibly a small come along between the two to lift the trans up on the jack.

Re: Pulling motor question
Could you strap the trans to the jack outside of the truck, then jack up one side of the truck high enough to get the transmission under? Once the trans is under, you can let the truck back down. That might work if you have a floor jack and trans jack

Re: Pulling motor question
What about pulling the tranny tunnel cover and dropping it in using your hoist and sling?

Re: Pulling motor question
Does this bearing look right? Pretty sure it goes this way.
And, it looks like you have to install the fork and yoke before the transmission is moved into place. Does that make sense? Or can you install the bearing on the trans shaft, slide the transmission into place and then slide the yoke lever into the bearing?

Re: Pulling motor question
It appears to be oriented correctly, but the one I just did did not have the sleeve on the front side of it. Also, is that a new throw out bearing? No use in reusing an old one as it may fail prematurely as did one for me recently. It wasn't fun pulling the tranny again for a 20 dollar part!

1.85 new vs 1.26 old throw out bearing I am not sure if that new thicker bearing will fit. Have not been able to find a different one. Any pics of yours?

A couple of things to note. The clutch fork should have a clip in place that snaps over the ball stud in the bell housing. Don't forget a dab of grease there. A lot of them are missing. And the throw out bearing needs to be installed on the forks correctly. The forks go behind the metal tabs. I hope this helps. |

What do you mean the forks go behind the metal tabs? You mean in the slot of the bearing?
