I have a used, rebuilt 1406 on my crate ZZ4 and for the past 15K it has never failed me. Stock fuel pump no reg and never had a heat spacer. And in my 65 mustang that runs hot under the hood with my fresh 289 built radical I have a new 1405 box stock without the heat spacer and again a stock fuel pump. Never hard to start. In fact I never have run the heat spacer on any of my cars and always run a stock pump, guess I am missing something here for the past 50 years

Maybe your under-hood and/or ambient temps are lower? I have a friend who switched his 1406 carb for a Holley because he was embarrassed when it took 5-10 seconds of cranking to start after sitting at car shows for a few hours. But like you said, not everyone has the problem. Are your intake manifolds iron or aluminum?

As for the pump, it's always been the same for me. Stock with around 5 psi, I assume.

My intake manifolds always seam to be aluminum, performers, also I live in Portland, Or. But then we had 115 for 3 days this year.

I needed a regulator for my 1406
Pump was putting out over 9psi
I might be mistaken, but q-jets only need like 4 psi.

I stuck a guage fitting inline just before my carb, the stock pump on my truck pushes 4.5-5 psi consistently.
