Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
just ordered these motor mounts for my truck from Trans Dapt Performance Products; i went with these because i wanted to do without the crossmember, gives me better access to drop the pan if i needed to.

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
got the leaf spring situation under control and mounted them with the axles this week... got the motor mounted also, but need to shim it up about 3/4" it's sitting a little too low right now.

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
come to find out the steering arm is too short, need to find a way to make it longer, it's extended all the way out already... ohhhh, thinking makes my brain hurt!!!
the 15" rim i borrowed from my tire lady doesn't fit... i'm going to run down to the shop this weekend to see if she'll lend me some 16+ ones, so i can roll my truck around for the time being.

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
Looks great! Out of curiosity, why did you get replace the full-floating rear axle and convert it from 8 to 6 lug? Most people are doing the exact opposite when upgrading their trucks.

Nevermind, I went on the website and looked at the pics. It looks like a bushing of some sort for flex. Thanks for the info.

Get your steering arm issue worked out? Looks like the newer axle needs a longer coupler? Here is the one on my '73-'87.

In any event, I've taken on a '72 K10 conversion job (I'm finding out 4wd is more troublesome than 2wd) and am interested to see how your swap goes. After researching the issue at length, it looks like the LSX/4l60E/NP241 combination is the way to go in order to avoid a lot of adapter cost and complexity to get an LSX/4L60E to work with an NP203 or NP205. Has anyone tackled NP241 shifting for manual versions? Going with an electronic NP241 would be slick but getting the whole works to operate correctly scares me a bit. |

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
I am back; couldn't work on the truck in awhile, but I think I can manage to find some free time now. Started today installing the gas shocks but ram into a little problem; the upper mount is too wide and I don't know what to fill in the gap with. The lower mounts are fine.

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
Mine came with spacers.
Not a direct picture, but you should see the spacers I'm talking about. Great looking truck by the way!!! |

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
You could maybe stack some washers in there?
But actually looking at the picture i would almost be led to believe that the outer tang might have been bent outward? I would think the angle on the frame where the grade 8 washer is should match the angle on the tab, but look it over closely before any attempt to bent it, make sure the holes will still allow the bolt to pass thru if you do try to straighten it.

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
Looking back, to the best of my knowledge on the rims a minimum of 16" is required.. its why a lot of trucks had the 16.5 rims.

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
Thanks mjensen; I found the spacer and mounted it with no problems. But now i have a question on the rear mounting shocks; if I take off the strap that holds the shock it expands all the way out; but if I don't undo the strap it won't reach for me to secure it to the bottom bracket.

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
Glad it worked out. Yup...crack the strap and bolt it on
I found mine was easier to put it on the bottom bolt and push it down to the top bolt. |

Re: Project: 1970 4x4 underway...
So everyone made fun of me for having my tow hooks on backwards but come to find out they won't go on the other way... so I guess I have to drill new holes or do without tow hooks...
