yeah it's a older non powerstroke, doesn't say Ford anywhere on it, and it only cost me about $30 so far including the purchase price oh and runs too

IDI stands for Indirect Injected. Powerstrokes are DI which are direct injection. Basicaly on the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI's, the fuel from the injector is injected into a cup in the cylinder head where it mixes with intake air, and then goes into the cylinder. Where as a direct injected engine such as the powerstroke, the fuel injector is directly in the combustion chamber and shoots the fuel right in the cylinder.

All the ford diesels were built by Navistar until the 6.7 scorpian in 2011.

Thanks. I sold the 70's clip long ago. It had taiwan fenders on it that got damaged when I put the body lift on so it wasn't all that great. I got the GMC grill from a GMC burb and my youngest brother made the emblem that was on it.

Some little progress. While waiting for my Dad to come pick the ignition in my 56 New Yorker, I got the LH front spring installed. I'll have to take all this back off to paint it and install new bushings later when it's in the shop. For now, I just need to get it rolling.

Re: Project: B.A.D. 1976 K30 CCLB

Well, the front springs are in and the D44HD is hanging in there by 3 u-bolts. We got the neighbor's skid loader and moved the truck from behind the shop. So now half of it can roll again. I need to find time to go get the D70 rear, and try to figure out how I want to do the rear now that I don't have a lift kit. I had it set up as a shackle flip with no block. I'm thinking it will ride better this way so I might leave it be. What do you guys think? I want this truck to ride as good as it can.

Re: Project: B.A.D. 1976 K30 CCLB

How many leaf springs did you put in it? I assume you'll probably pull your gooseneck with it at some point, so you'll probably gonna have at least a 7 or 8 pack? 9 would probably be over kill. Those 56" springs will ride alot better than my 52's lol. Since its gonna be the family hauler though probably should leave that shackle flip on it, cause i assume it will allow the springs to flex more and give a smoother ride.

Re: Project: B.A.D. 1976 K30 CCLB

No big progress, but some. I dug out the engine for this truck the other day and I have 3 out of 6 rods and pistons cleaned up ready to go. I have a special project for an engine going in this truck. This will be the first time ever (as far as I know) this combo has ever been tried. I'm excited, this should make for a killer fuel efficient engine! So, parts are on the way for the engine, and work is being done on the engine. I ordered poly engine mounts today for it. I also ordered some DIY4X shackles for the rear. I have front u-bolts being bent locally for the D60, and am getting some bent so I can get a rear axle back under it to move it around for now. I also found some poly bushings for the front springs left over from my Longhorn. I have been trying to decide what fuel tank I want to use and I may try to put a 35 gallon dodge fuel tank in it. I have to measure tomorrow to see if it will fit. I also need to find a radiator for this truck too.

I like pictures. I would say I am probably going to be starting my short bed frame at the beginning of next month hopefully. Then I may start saving for a cummins we will just have to see.

Re: Project: B.A.D. 1976 K30 CCLB

Some parts are coming in for the engine. My new injection lines, head gasket and new tappets, still waiting on the lower gasket kit. I started getting the pistons and connecting rods cleaned up. I have 3 out of 6 done so far. Then I need to clean up all valve train stuff and everything else. This engine is going to be a budget build and I'm trying to use most of the pieces I have had sitting around for a while. I'm using a 1989 12v block and crankshaft, 02 24v england connecting rods and pistons, 02 24v cylinder head, and valve train components. I'll wait to tell you the unique part of the build until I get the engine put together.

Before

After

Are you balancing those too while your at it? What kind of lift pump do you normally run in your trucks?

Thanks. I was surprised how well the parts are cleaning up. They had some flash rust starting on them.

Nope, not going to balance them. I've seen too many of these engines live at 5k rpm with no issues and this one will be doing good to see over 3k I'm sure. Balancing does help with idle vibrations and I usually do it on my competition builds, but this is a budget econo build. A little factoid, these bottom ends are good up to 800-1000+hp with stock cummins parts. It's pretty crazy!

Re: Project: B.A.D. 1976 K30 CCLB

I didn't get the chance to actually work on this truck last weekend. But, I did go and pull out the D70 rear end from the donor truck. Boy it was cold and windy that night too! Go figure. It just happened to be a 3:54 limited slip, so I lucked out. My plan is to put this truck in the shop Friday morning and get cracking on it Saturday morning since I have to work Friday night. I already went and borrowed the neighbor's skid loader, so progress better happen this weekend. I did get my new rear shackles from DIY4X and they are sweet! Plus I ordered a gasket for the engine. Maybe next week I'll get the engine totally put together. I'll just set pieces on it for mock up for this weekend.

A little progress now. I got the D60 bolted in the front and cut off the spring perches from the axle housing. I ground the perches and housing and put the rear end under the springs. But now I'm working on clearancing the perches so the chevy 2 1/2" wide u bolts will work since the dodge axle had 3" wide springs.

Re: Project: B.A.D. 1976 K30 CCLB

Just what you pic ho's like, pics! I got the D70 under it and bolted in. I'll have to set pinion angle later.

I put some 265's on it and sat it down. I then walked around it kind of in awe trying to figure out if I liked it so low now. But wait, I still have to remove the 3" body lift. Oh boy.

Next Mathew, Nick, and I removed the box.

Then I cleaned off the frame and began marking it out so I could prep to cut it. From what I can tell there are a few different styles of frame configs on these trucks. The truck in the south bay has a cross member under the rear cab bushings. Mine has mounts on the frame with cross bar tieing them together. So, I compromised and measured 7" back from my cab frame mounts, and made a mark. Then I removed 14" out of the frame. I measured 4" down on the frame and drew a line. I measured 4" in front of each line and that's how I got the stagger pattern if anyone was curious.

I placed jack stands under the back of the cab and chocked the front tires. Changed the tip on the plasma cutter and started cutting. I had Nick steady the rear portion of the frame and roll it back when it was cut free.

I then ground my cuts and v'd out the edges to make for a better penetrating weld. Next I rolled the frame up and had to let the air out of the rear tires so I could get the 2 sections of frame to line back up. I then used flat pieces of steel and c-clamps to get the frame back together and hold it in place. I also measured cross wise and from a certain point on each side to make sure it's square again. Then I started welding. Tomorrow I'll finish it up.
