I got my tach installed today, not as bad as I thought. you can see in the last pic why some of the structure has to be removed.

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

I cut the stucture out with a pair of diagonal cutting plyers and needle nose plyers. I made alot of relief cuts going a little bit at a time, then drilled a 1/2in hole in the back for the tach lead.

Before and after, the tach works great. I didnt see any movement in the gas gauge but I almost have half of a tank so we will see in the next couple of days if its working.

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

I just got mine on Friday. I was real excited but to be honest I'm not real happy. 1. The body is made out of molded plastic, not like the original metal. I thought I was getting metal(when I was told they use all Chevy and american parts), oh well. 2. The fuel posts were off center about a 1/16 and it wouldn't sit right inside cluster housing. I had to cut down the metal tabs for the connection because wires that were soldered on were in the way. For the price I just thought I'd get a better product....hopefully i have no other problems....Iroc gauges may be happening.....

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

Different years used slightly different fonts on the gauges, correct? Which years does this GMSports tach match perfectly?

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

The gauge font matches 81-up. They also fit perfectly in the 90-91 electronic clusters.

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

Those gauges from GMSports look amazing but im not a fan of the moleded plastic. Looks like im gonna start looking for a used metal tach.... hoping not to spend over 250.00

I never did update this but the fuel gauge works perfect as well as the tach.

I was like you when I seen the plastic also. But when installed I could not tell the diffrence. I have not had anybody look at mine and say ,hey thats plactic.I have had alot of people look at mine and even asked a couple people if it was plastic or metal. They could not tell. Mine works great.

Something else to keep in mind is that an original big truck tach will most likely only read to 4K, or maybe 5K if you are lucky.

You really cannot tell the difference when it is installed. It doesn't look plastic at all, and the font matches the newer gauges (81-up) perfectly.

Looks like the font is the same 'style', but it's not exact. Looks like the OE numbers are 'fatter' vs the aftermarket unit. Nice looking set-up regardless.

You are correct SCOTI, the tach font is thinner but IMO its still a great alternative to all the other options out there.

Re: combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster

Maybe the font is a little thinner on the later cluster (91)? I thought mine looked pretty close. Since I wanted it to look somewhat original, I may not have given it the "eagle eye".
