Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
Started working on the rear of the frame today. Being at the beach and having a salt spreader on this truck for the last 6 years have really taken their toll on the frame but it's still structurely sound. I got the rivets out of the rear spring brackets so they can be removed to install the shackle flip kit. While the bed is off I plan to sandblast and paint the frame, install the 2nd fuel tank, and paint the back of the cab and front of the bed.

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
I finally started taking my "new" bed apart so I can get it home and start cleaning it up. I picked this up for $300 and while it's not perfect, it's in a lot better shape than what I had.

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
I have my Off Road Design shackle flip kit bracket installed. Now I have to cut the leaf spring perches and shock mounts off of the 14 bolt rearend. The perches have to be moved inward 1" per side. The 3/4 ton trucks had the perches mounted 1" further out than on the 1 ton trucks. I ordered new perches from DIY4X.com and a rear disc brake conversion kit.

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
I'm going with disk brakes on the rear, I have the brackets and the rotors, and it's time to order the calipers. The auto store needs to know if it's JB6, JD6, JB7, or JD7. The "JD" are for the hydroboost system, which is what I have, and I believe the "6" have a lower stopping power rating than the "7". Should I get the JB or the JD and should I get the 7 for the front and the 6 for the rear?

Nothing exciting happening. I just picked the truck up today from the sandblaster. They only charged $120 to blast the rear of the frame from the cab - back.

Man I really like those tires. I'd love the wheels if all chrome! That's just me.
I'd that rear shackle flip ORD? How many inches? Posted via Mobile Device |

The rear shackle flip is ORD, mine is the 2.5" with a 6" shackle, supposedly gives 4" total lift. ORD said not to run a 4" shackle flip kit with 8" lift springs. |

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
Yeah, I played around with a grinder and a wire brush to try to remove some of the rust, I wanted to do it myself because I didn't want to drive it the ten miles to the blaster with no taillights, and I can't tow it with these wheels because it won't fit on my trailer anymore lol. But I ended up driving it like it is, and blasting it was definately the way to go. It turned out better than I expected. I know a full frame-off resto would be better, but I don't have the time or space for all of that right now, and I need to get this truck back on the road ASAP and keep it drivable while I continue to work on it.

Do you need seatbelts still? Go to seatbeltsplus.com. Also check out cupholdersplus.com. Let me know if this helps! BTW, WICKED truck man!

Thanks, I do still need seatbelts. I found some webbing on Ebay for about $25 per roll but I'm a little nervous about it. I'll check out your links!

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
I ordered a sample of "torch red" colored seatbelt from seatbeltsplus.com, it matches perfectly! I'm gonna order enough to do all of the seatbelts. Thanks for the link!

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
Got some paint on the frame from the cab-back. Started putting the rear disk brakes on tonight. I've never worked on one until now, but it's so easy to work on this 14 bolt full floater I think everything I own from now on will get one! I think I have about $400 total in the rear disk brake kit. That's with all new calipers, rotors, pads, and stainless steel braided brake lines from ORD. Try that on any other axle.

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
With this wheel/brake combo I can change the brake pads without removing the wheels lol!
It took me all week, but i got the brake lines finished up and the lines bled. Brakes work great! I also sanded the back of the cab to get it ready for some paint. Last edited by 91V3500; 05-12-2013 at 10:12 PM. |

Re: 1991 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 Build
Just wondering if your new perches were 3 hole or not since the shackle flip moves the axle forward you could've used the front perch hole to put it back in the stock location, personally i can't stand when axles are moved forward or backwards lol but just preference but its really nice truck so it doesn't matter
