Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
What size tires are these?
And what wheels are them? Also what are them steelies wheels off of? I tried some 8 bolt wheels on my 3600 57' and when I turned the radius rod smashes into the lip of the rim. They were 16" steelies Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
The tires are 31x10.50R16.5LT Kelly Safari AWR tires. I am not sure of the spacing on the rims. The truck had a 1/2" spacer on the front wheels to keep them from hitting. I left the spacer in for the new 16" rims but the lugs are now too short for normal usage. I am going to need to change the tie rod ends for these new rims and install longer lugs at some point.

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
My truck was a mess of different colors when I got it. I sprayed it all in Duplicolor Self Etching rattle can primer mostly because everyone seems to use gray or red oxide primer and I just wanted something different - big mistake. It didn't protect at all. It faded badly and allowed rust underneath. But while I had it in that color, my interior looked like hell because it was in black that was chipping all over. I painted the dash in two tone with Rustoleum Sage Green and Krylon Celery green. I think it turned out pretty good and thought you might want to see it:

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
As you can see the "Before" was very bad. I couldn't "just live it" - it bugged me too much. Unfortunately, since I recently re-sprayed the outside with Rustoleum Oregano Satin, it doesn't really "go" with the Sage green interior - DOH!
Oh well, this is temporary just to have it be one color while I do all the other stuff I want. I like the look for the cheapo rattle can stuff that it is. At some point I'll have to redo it but for now it stays as is. At least its presentable. |

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
I am not doing the standard gray color that all of these trucks were on the inside. The sample dash down at Car and Truck Shop looks nice but I would rather do the almond color (Arabian Ivory) on the inside.
I like your door panel color combo. I have already started powder coating the inside pieces and will see what the green looks like on the almond door panel. At some point I will strip all of the parts down and paint them in the yard with the Sage Green (Oriental Green 1957-1958 color) and be done with it. Just going for a simple look and something I can drive to Home Depot without worrying about door dings! |

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
I am powder coating all of the accent pieces in almond and leaving the body panels in place. Once I get it weighed Friday then I will pull the whole thing apart and shorten the bed to 90". After that I will paint the body panels Sage Green and have the inner fenders and and radiator pieces powder coated satin black. I will then install all of the trim pieces and bumpers that I will/have already done in almond. I am taking everything apart and powder coating it in pieces.
It will then sit for a few months, until after car show season, till I find a radiator, driveshaft, wiring, fuel system and brakes. |

Oh, got it.
Mind if I ask who you're using for powder coating? |

I have had him blast three 56' bodies, one 55' (shown below), frames and all sorts of parts coated and they all look great. He is just 3/4 mile from my house too! |

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
I drove down to the beach this morning and paid $560 for two rear fenders, two decent doors, a standard heater, gas tank, bench seat and tailgate. It was a great deal and the guy I purchased them from was very cool. Once I got everything situated I was ready for the VIN verification. I had found out the local Police do the VIN verification so I was good to go!. I wanted to Rock-Paper-Scissors for it but he did not find it amusing. ;-)
Once he left I primed some bare spots I had cleaned with the DA sander and called it a day. Hopefully, once DMV titles this thing I can disassemble it and do it the right way. |

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
I have been busy working on the cars so the truck has not been getting any attention. While I was picking up the wagon body at a friends place I met one of the members from this site Fabguy and he was very, very cool! He let me walking around his shop, across from my friends place, and showed me some of his classic projects. Clean work and good fab quality. He even let us use his forklift to load the wagon body on my trailer. How cool is that?
I look forward to seeing him again at Pomona in a few weeks. I hope to get back in the 56' truck project over Xmas break but the shop is filled with so many of my other 56' projects I am not that convinced. Tim |

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
Hi Tim. Yeh, Mike (Fabguy) is very cool.
Nice to know you'll be getting back on the truck soon. Unless I missed it, what's happening with this wagon? Is it to keep or are you building to sell it?

Re: 1956 Chevrolet 3600 Project - Pictures
Hi Tim!
I looked up This thread and see that's you've not posted since 2013. What happened? This is kind of a repeat of the post I just made on the other site, sorry. I'm about to call the sandblaster you referred me to and wanted to check in, ask you some questions. My "drive-it-as-I-build-it" '55 has become a frame off job and I need to keep moving or it'll become a heap of no progress parts!! Hope all is well. I'd love to come'over and see your shop. If it's in the same industrial park where Mike (Fabguy) was then I think I could find it. I'll drop you a PM on both sites. Best, Dan.
