I like shiny looking restored trucks with detailed factory wiring and factory underhood details, etc....

with that said, that green paint, body rot, that bad ass steering wheel and that golem looking thing painted on the back. This is a bad ass truck, it says it means business way more than the flat black murder jobs...i like it, it has attitude and character!

I can appreciate all the work that goes into smoothing a truck out and making it perfect (lots of body men in my family) but ultimately I don't want this truck to be perfect. My intention is to have it have attitude and also to not have any reservations about throwing some rocks, dirt, trash or whatever in the bad and making a dump run. I am thinkin I may patch the rust and grind the patches smooth. Work any dents I can mechanically and try my best to shoot for straight.....ish. then bare metal and clear it. I live in New Mexico and although we do get rain occasionally, we don't get a lot. I love the bare metal look but I like it rough also, slightly dented and scarred. Primer and seal all internal surfaces but leave the exterior looking raw. I got some bare metal clear from Eastwood that I want to try out on the hood. If it holds up while I do all the other rust repair then maybe I will strip the paint and primer off of everything and do it up. If it can handle the once every 6mo car wash then we will be good. If not well than maybe something like a light color :white, silver, sage green/ then do all the trim and bumpers in black bed liner. either way gonna do the trim that way whether the skin gets paint or clear.

Oh yeah I posted this in another thread but this is the knob I am going with for a while.

OK well after farting around with it for awhile I was unable to figure out how to post a youtube video without just using the link. I thought that there was a bracket code you could type in before and after but I can't seem to find it. BUt here is a video I filmed on my phone a few weeks back after I got the engine started and the cam broke in. The noise in the video is from the power steering pump which hadn't had all of the air bubbles purged through the pump yet.

Ok next I got the parking brake brackets welded in.

O so at this point I got the parking brake loosely attached so that at least it wasn't dragging on the ground. Next to start getting the stuff together to put the face back on this thing.









At thins point it is street legal again. Now I just need to make a list of all the things I need to get tidied up: Speedo calibration, have the Trans shop inspect my install and start my warranty, Adjust parking brake, install the sending unit for the fuel guage...... and a ton more but atleast I can drive it while I tweak on it.

oh yeah in case someone knows I would like to know how to post the little video window instead of the URL link for youtube videos.

Thanks guys, not quite the sleeper I want it to be yet but so far it makes a good shop truck and can break traction at will. Now I just need to learn some carb tuning its running so rich I could run a hose from the exhaust back to the tank. Ok well not that bad but hey I am at 5k feet. Does anyone know if you have to take some timing out of it if you lean it out? Just curious if I need to revisit the timing every time I make a jet/metering rod change.

I posted this in another thread so I am just adding it to the build to keep track of it. I have been having issues with parking lamps blowing the filaments and after asking for advice about LEDs I was encouraged to look into universal sockets with a built in ground. I went down to Oreilys and got me a pair of universal parking lamp sockets. I don't remember the part number but they were cheap and went to go ahead and rewire my hood. I took all of the old wiring out except the plug and about 5in. of he original wires. The sockets I got didn't have a screw mount so I had to make one with some heavy guage wire and some screws. Here are the pics.









The funny thing is, I got everything all tidy and lookin nice and I think I have a faulty socket because when the parking lights are on, the left side is lighting both filaments. So now I have to take it out and go back and get another.

OK been away from the post for a bit so its time to catch up. I figured out the light socket issue. It turns out one of my universal sockets was wired backwards and the turn signal filament was lit when the parking filament was supposed to be lit. At night because the turn signal filament is brighter it looked like both were lit.

So when the weather was hotter, around 95-100 here in August at mile high I started having cooling issues. It was ok when I was going 50mph+ but at idle the temps would climb as far as..... well I would shut the truck off at 230 or so. Since I upgraded to a single belt system the fan diameter was larger and would not fit in the stock shroud. The other problem that you can see from the pics is the new radiator in the stock location was too far from the fan to be very effective either.

So I decided that if I have to build a shroud I would also convert to electric fans since its something I wanted to do later anyways.

Well I have never built anything with sheet metal before and since I don't have a TIG or a Argon bottle to use my Aluminum spool gun on my MIG I decided to make the shroud out of 18ga steel.

I got sheet at the local steel house for like $65 or so.


I did some research on the fans an since my limiting factor was going to be the core dimensions I looked at the 16" fans and the best I could find only moved like 3000-3500cfm. I found an 8" fan that would flow 2400cfm and and since I could fit them I got 4 of them. I tried researching how much air flow you would to convert to electric and a bunch of different cfm ratings were thrown out there. One even stated that his mechanical fan on his turbo diesel flowed about 10,000cfm. So instead of questioning who was right and who wasn't I just figured if I have 4 of these little suckers then I should have way more than enough. Also another greath thing is they draw only 4amps each.

So I mocked them up:



then started cutting out the holes:



And then started bending up the metal. I really wish I had a sheet metal brake, then my shroud wouldn't have a bunch of hammer dimples.







I tried to keep all of the wiring on the shroud so it would be contained if or when I needed to remove it for anything.



Then mounted it to the core with some self tappers







Now the temp isn't as hot as it was when I started having issues so I don't yet know how it will perform at 100deg but at 85deg it only goes above 185 until the thermostat opens then stays at or below 180deg.
