Re: Rarest factory paint combos
How do you know "Black Beauty" has an automatic just by seeing that particular shot of the radiator in the bed?

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
Original radiator ' s for manual transmission ' s didn't have built in transmission coolers. Only trucks with automatic transmissions would have the line fittings in the radiator tank

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
True, but that photo shows what appears to be the top portion of the radiator and I've never seen a tranny cooler connected to the upper tank.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
Automatic GMC's used a radiator that had a taller top and was more round than chevy (automatic or manual) radiator or manual GMC radiator. Below is a pic of a automatic chevy radiator. (Not as tall or round)

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
Is there any production number data for 1965 Suburban with the color combinations? I have a 1965 Suburban custom cab with gate that is yellow (518) & ivory (526) two-tone code is 548. Is there any way of finding out how may where produced in this color combo? From all the info I can find this color combo must be very low production on any of the C-10 trucks.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
Another rare gray green metallic on a '64 http://www.thestreetpeep.com/2012/12...nel-truck.html Note chrome bumpers were not part of the "Custom" package. Painted bumpers were used unless the separate V 37 option was ordered.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
As someone earlier stated theses trucks were sold as working trucks not beauty queens as the new trucks today. But beauty is in the beholder of the eye. I think these trucks are some of the best trucks that GM ever made. While I have no idea of the rare colors I'd bet that 503a light green is a high percentage not being rare but high in number, after seeing a lot of trucks on here where people are redoing them after they take the fenders off you see remnants of that famous green...heck even my truck is that famous green underneath everything else...

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
Another angle to ponder.... rarest factory colors produced vs. rarest factory colors that have survived. The original-paint survivors are the only ones we see around today and we base a lot of our assumptions on those trucks. In my experience seems it like dark-color paint didn't survive as well as lighter colors. Makes sense, I suppose. Maybe that's why I've seldom seen dark color trucks with nice, original paint. Agree? Disagree?

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
My burb is in dark yellow. I'll look at the paint code tomorrow to see if it was an original 2 tone or not.

I looked up the 1966 paint chip online and Dark yellow seemed to be the closest color. Maybe it was a special order color? The truck does have a lot of other options including the sports trim. Most of the firewall chalk is intact from what I can tell. Do you know if and where the paint code would be on it? Thanks again. Here is a little better pic |

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
Yes it appears to be a special order color. Remember the gold '62 "museum piece", also a special order color. Most special order colors, except for fleet colors, are standard GM colors used on older cars and trucks. Sorta looks like '60-'61 GMC Mesa Tan. No paint codes listed on GMC data plates. Any plans for original wheels and caps?

We do have the original 15" split rims and caps but tires need replaced. We also have a set of 16" splits and just got a set of 17.5" 1 piece wheels. Still not sure which set we will go with. Last edited by Classic v6 GMC's; 11-30-2015 at 08:55 PM. |

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
Well after searching ebay for years I finally found a 1966-1967 GMC data book and better yet a special paint colors book. It has 200 special order paint colors.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
I would pass on the 15", they are just too small in diameter. The 16" lock ring wheel will look very beefy with 7.50 - 16 bias ply tires. The 17.5 is a good choice if you want to stay with solid rims, but the 8-17.5 tire is not as beefy as a 7.50-16. IMO, if you have a rare original paint truck, original wheels and caps are a must to complete the look.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos
So that's the book I read about in some literature. Yep, your paint color is somewhere in that 200 special color book.
