Re: Targa Truck '71 GMC build - The first truck in Targa Newfoundland

Hello,

Been a while. Things got a bit wild at the end. The build was intense and sponsors took interest.

Just before the truck was going to ship, Chevrolet Performance hooked us up with Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center out of Texas. They both were hugely enthusiastic about the truck and Scoggin-Dickey sponsored it. Crazy.

Crazy, because like most of you - I'm just a home builder. My garage has a carpeted dirt floor, I originally built this truck with my dad.

We get to the Targa Newfoundland, and everyone says you need a crew, you need this, you need that. Fortunately, the one good piece of advice I was give before was to build a tough vehicle to compete with. In the end, we came in 2nd in our category (Targa Classic). AND we did everyone of the 45+ stages in trophy time, some take years to do this. We were happy to say the least, and tired.

But here is the icing on the cake, and it's a fun read. Some of which you will recognize from this thread. Road and Track picked up the story of the Targa Truck. NEAT.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/go/car-c...racing-monster

Take care, I'm still catching up and will post some proper updates of the truck.

Congrats bud, I grew up in Newfoundland and had been a spectator every year but missed the last 2. I am hoping to get back and run Targa myself in the next couple years. And of course it will be in my 71.

Love the build. What backspacing are your wheels?

Re: Targa Truck '71 GMC build - The first truck in Targa Newfoundland

Hey! A video from our Targa Newfoundland adventure. There were lot's who said racing a truck was impossible, naysayers are amazing fuel.

In the end I also had companies like Scoggin Dickey Parts Center and Chevrolet Performance wanted to support the project, never saw that coming. It was a crazy adventure.

Enjoy. More to come.

Not sure if I'm in on this yet, but I'm in on it for sure now. This truck is amazing. Checked it out on FB. Read the long article about it and the race on the rock and watched a few youtube vids. Speaking of vids you have, did RoadKill ever respond to you about there dodge?

You must. It's so much fun. The rules on the trucks entires have been set by my truck, so if you have any questions ask. The roll cage needs to be 1.75" .120 mild steel. NOT 1 5/8" like most cars. Otherwise the rules are simple. Personally, I deco a fire system. Once the cab is caged, it's hard to get out of.

I've been reluctant to post this, because you need to measure for your suspension. I run 18"x10" with 295 all the way around WITH stock a-frames. The front backspace is 5.75" and the rear is 4.75". AGAIN, measure what you have. This set-up is done to get maximum rubber under MY truck.

Thanks and also thanks for checking out the links.

Yes, Roadkill did respond. Mike was in touch to say it looked like an awesome time, but they already had commitments. One of which was drag week.

Sadly, those couple weeks in September so much happens. Drag Week. Targa Newfoundland. LS Fest. We have a new monster race next year called the Ontario 1500... etc. etc. Hard to pick where to be.

Hey. Yet another thing I never imagined would come from all of this. The truck is up on Chevrolet Performance's "The Block". Neat.

Thanks guys! More cool news. Hooniverse has nominated the Targa Truck for #HCOTY - Hooniverse Car of the Year. It's cool to be yet another truck taking on a title meant for cars. Please click on the link and check it out!

Re: Targa Truck '71 GMC build - The first truck in Targa Newfoundland

Hello everyone! Happy Spring.

I've been thrashing away for a couple of weeks, I have my first track day tomorrow. Tested everything last night and my running lights do not work. Headlights work. Turn signals work. NO dash lights. NO interior light either.

Headlight switch? Ground?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Re: Targa Truck '71 GMC build - The first truck in Targa Newfoundland

Good luck on the track day!

I'm thinking it is probably a headlight switch or the fuse feeding it. The different areas rely on different grounds, but they can't be ruled out either.
