For $20, snap it up quick 'cause it won't last long! You won't have any problems selling it if AirSpeed decides not to take it.

I appreciate the offer, really looking for a 72 though. You should buy that sucker anyway, if it's in good shape you could make a nice little profit selling it! Thanks again!

Bummer dude. "Make em" buy a nice OEM replacement grille. If not, you really should consider paying the difference, because you've already said you won't be happy with a repro. Yes it might cost you another $300-400, but saves you from "I wish I had". That's a nice truck, keep it that way.

I doubt I'll find an OEM grill as perfect as mine was, I'm looking though!

Six grand to fix that? I could go on a serious rant here about shops over charging but I won't, suffice it to say I think you should negotiate as much cash as you can without them totaling it and source all the parts yourself to fix the damage right and then have the paint blended to match.

I agree, it seems very high, their telling me the front of the frame is bent and that's why it's so high, I haven't been back to see it so I don't know how it's bent. To me it looks like simply pulling off bent sheet metal and bolting new on but I never got to see under the hood as it wouldn't open. I'm sure they might have to spend some time getting everything to line up again but $6000 seems high. I've used this shop many times in the past and they've always been reasonable and did a good job. I'm thinking I'm going to end up doing it myself.

Most frame shops will do a pull for $400.00 or so. The problem is, there are very few frame only shops left. Most are auto body and frame collision repair and they will gouge you. Look for an off-road specialty shop instead. Twisted frames are common amongst the off road set and there are shops that will do a pull without wanting your firstborn as payment.

Great advice. My frame was all jacked up and the guy straightened the whole thing for $250, the guy even let me watch him do it (most won't) and he showed me all the measurements when he was finished.

Re: got a deer, used my truck

I stopped by the body shop Friday and found my truck was still not touched, apparently the repair estimate came in $49 more than Allstate thinks my truck is worth and they now want to total it. The final estimate came in at $5,549.00, $2500 of it for parts. I refused to let them total it so they're sending an appraiser to look at it, seems ridiculous that they'd pay at least $150 or more to have it appraised instead of just paying the $49 over what they think my truck is worth! Hopefully the appraiser likes GM products.
I've been stuck driving a minivan for two weeks, it's getting tough wearing a mask everywhere I go!

This sounds ridiculous to me... go back to the shop and ask them to remove replacing the headlight or something, just to get the damn thing below the amount, or they're not going to "get the job" if the truck gets totaled.

Then, when you get the check, fix it yourself (after the frame gets fixed) then take it in for paint.

As a side note... you ever figure out what was wrong with your crate motor? You never updated the thread?

Actually, they want it for the value of the parts which is far higher than the estimate to repair it. If you let them total it they make money on both ends. That's why my truck is insured with a collector car insurer. None of that BS to deal with..

Re: got a deer, used my truck

Ask them to find one as nice as yours and compare the prices. I bet the repairs prove to be half of replacing it.

They told me they would also be looking at Craigslist in my area to compare sale prices of similar trucks, I looked at Craigslist in my area and found none that had been "restored" as much as mine has been, the highest priced 4X4 72 +/- truck I could find in my area was $1500.

When they do the comparison, they're going to have to compare condition, options etc... can't compare apples and oranges. You may have to put your foot down hard and remind them though. Insurance is a great thing until you need it. They love taking your money but not pay out to you.

I remember several people gave their insurance co a link to the for sale section of the board to help determine value

I had a meth head ram the back of my 69 a few years back, she had no insurance (no teeth either) promised she would pay for repairs, found her shack about a month later, she offered me an alternative type of payment which I promptly declined! Ended up buying a new bumper and brackets myself. The ins adjuster called me a couple hours ago telling me he can see from photos that my truck was obviously worth more than the repairs and "thinks" all will be good. It's getting old driving a mini van! At least it's a Chevy! Found a bunch of fancy buttons and do dads in the ceiling console, at least I get to play with buttons in the van! Heck I don't even have to open the doors manually, I get to just push buttons!

"Alternative type of payment"... Lmao. Well hopefully that adjusters "thinking" goes along with his word. Sounds like you're getting spoiled man! I've been driving the Toyota to work myself. This smooth ride and power windows and cold a/c is the sh#t! Lol

Re: got a deer, used my truck

After 30 days my ins still hasn't authorized repair! They FINALLY sent an appraiser last Wednesday but he still hasn't turned in his findings. I don't get the hold up! Once it's fixed I'm getting an upgrade in my policy for classic car indurance, allstate has it but won't give me a quote until they get the appraisal. I was told by my agent that the appraiser promised to get it done today, if so I still have to wait another month before the shop gets it done, they haven't even ordered parts yet. the shop wants to use base/clear on the new fender and my door, I used single stage on my truck when I painted it, they're telling me I won't be able to see the difference. They're concerned with warrantee issues, worried if they use single stage it may fall off, I painted my truck five years ago and it's still in great shape so I don't know why they're worried. I think I'll be able to see the difference. Just ranting! I need my damn truck back!

I personally wouldn't let them get away with base clear. You will be able to tell the difference particularly as the paint gets a few years of age on it. When the clear starts peeling on the clip/blend areas you'll regret not forcing them into the single stage.

Just reading your thread. Im usually over in the '60 - '66 section. Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Especially the minivan part! I noticed that you mentioned that the body shop is going to spray a 2 stage on the panels that they are fixing. Id maybe ask around about that. Years ago, I bought a '94 Civic for my oldest. When I got it, I noticed that the front fenders and hood had been painted. I thought it was weird that the single stage was on the A pillar back but two stage on the front. Fast forward 6 years. Oldest bought her own car and I drive the Civic to work. The single stage and base coat / clear have aged so differently that I am thinking about stripping the front end and re shooting the whole car in single stage. I see it every time I get in or out of the car and it drives me crazy. Clear coat is peeling and just hasn't held up at all. The original paint is still fine and with a light wax, looks like new. As I think back, there are several cars that we have had that had noticeable differences in paint finishes on repaired panels of the same car. Id be a little skeptical and maybe opt to shoot the repaired panels myself. Im no body guy but it seems like when different paint systems are used, they seem to have different aging / durability characteristics that will show themselves after the warranty on the work runs out. That truck looked to be cherry before the wreck and should be put back together the way you built it and to the same condition. Just my .02. Hope you get it back soon!
