Yes, The car was really not all that messed up. Just some front end damage mostly on the headlight and front plastic. Motor still ran.....and ran good. He parked it and got a job in another state.....then one thing lead to another and well......he ended up staying and never coming back for the car.



I will have to call around and see what I can get done. I don't have proof of ownership but could get a bill of sale. He cant find the keys and I have not asked about the title. I didn't want to push my luck and have him think I was trying to make money on him giving me the car for the motor.

Well my kid's football season had me pretty busy with him playing football and her cheering. I was finally able to have some free time and pulled the motor out of the T/A.



Yeah, don't really look like I motor but I know there is a motor under all the emissions crap somewhere.

Good thing though is that the motor turns freely and is not locked up or anything.

No. Could not figure out how to start it without the keys. Tried a few different ways but it wouldn't work.

Well I did a little more work on the LT1 yesterday. This is mostly a long term project as I get time and funds since my 283 runs pretty good anyways.

Got most of the junk off the motor that don't need to be there anymore so eventually it can go to the engine shop. I can now actually tell that its a motor under all that extra junk.



Was looking for the engine numbers but could only find these numbers. Know what they are?

Those are casting numbers to identify its a 5.7 not the baby LT1 4.3.

I have messed around with older carb motors but pulling this motor out of the TA has posed more questions than answers. All of the wires and plugs are so foreign to me. Good thing there are sites like this and others to assist.

The link that helped me most was the location of the sensors and what they are. Spend some time looking around and will help. Questions hit us up. Plenty of knowledge on this board. It looks intimidating at first, but once you figure things out you'll feel comfortable messing around.

I put a TPI in my 66 GMC with the stock sensors and computer. Electronically they're very similar to the LT1. Feel free to shoot me any questions. In order to start the motor without the original key/lock setup you'll need someone to burn you a new Prom chip that disables the vehicle anti-theft system (VATS). Once that's done, you can start the truck however you'd like. I just used my factory lock/cylinder/key. I used a MOATES setup to burn my own chips.

Unlike the TPI, the LTI computer (PCM) uses reprogrammable flash memory. No need to get chips burned, you can load a custom program yourself with a cable.

Before you pay also think about the other things you may want changed at the same time (fan temps on/off, idle speed, etc.).

Or for about $80-100 bucks you can get all the hardware/software you need and start learning to tune yourself.

How hard is it to learn? I have NO experience on these newer motors with all the computers stuff.

There are forums that can help you. The learning curve is a little steep, but once you understand how things work, you can really tweak things nicely, especially for a custom install.

Yeah learning takes some mental investment, but it's awesome to be able to do your own changes. You'd want a wideband O2 sensor to really dial things in. Disabling the vats is as easy as a check box though, so it's an easy way to start. It was my first "tune".

For those of you who have done the swap I have a few questions.

When you got the PCM reprogrammed what all did you include?
What all did it take for the swap as far as changes with the newer style motor?
Where was your best source for new parts?
If you have power steering were you able to use the one that came for the car or did you use a more traditional truck one like most of us have already?

Right now my truck is set up with power steering and a 283. My plan for this LT1 is a slow rebuild as time and money allows but im in no real rush for this since my 283 still runs pretty good.

I don't think I will be using the Air Condition from the Trans Am so that will prob. get bypassed.

Would love to see any front views of your motor or any detailed pictures that show the components you used.

Cant always tell from the top view so if you have any photos of before the motor was in the truck like on a stand or before you put the front cap back on.
