Re: $500 trucks are still out there

Nice score on the $500 truck and the work you've done so far is looking good.

I bought my 63 GMC for $500 bucks also. Actually, now that I think about it, the price of the actual truck was probably the least amount of money I've spent on it.

Re: $500 trucks are still out there

Awesome build so far. I'm jealous. I'd love to find a truck like that to tinker with now that mines done. On the fuel pickup screen mine was varnished up so bad I thought I was screwed too. I took off that screen thing and soaked it in lacquer thinner overnight pulling it out a hitting it with a wire brush quite a bit and it came out like new eventually and it went back in and that's what on it now. Your varnished up fuel line story sounds just like mine when I was trying to get my truck going after it had been sitting since the 90s. lol..

I don't think I have spent over $500 in one transaction yet. Cumulative, yes. I also haven't bought tires (new ones), done any major mechanical, or started any body work.

I ended up just buying a new pickup and float assembly. I also power washed the tank about 3 times, rinsing with wd40 in between each and finally rinsing with some gas. Seems to be clean now.

Re: $500 trucks are still out there

Got some silver Rally's (Ralleys?) for my '86 so the '64 got the hand me down black ones. Had a buddy of mine cut some aluminum circles to fill in the empty holes on the front caps, and I cut out the centers of the rears and put the aluminum blanks in there also. I've really been resisting any kind of hot rod look, but man does it look better:

Think I'm now going to find some kind of bowtie sticker to put on the caps.

Look closely, it's there:

Guy says he bought it 5 or 6 years ago, trailered it home, and there it sat. He had quite a few projects, and actually some neat stuff like a 69 Riviera, an old Willys pickup, and a couple of Impalas among other things. Says brakes are locked up, and it probably last ran in 1992 or so.

It's a 64, not a 66, which is what I wanted anyway, 230, 3speed and has a title. He starts fiddling around trying to get it started and I told him not to bother and handed him the money. It has 4 flats, is down in the woods and has locked up brakes. Fortunately we have an old school tire shop/wrecker service in town so the next day and $75 later it is in my driveway.

There was at least 6 inches of stuffing, pine cones, acorns and rat turds in the floor. Got out the leaf blower, power washer, removed seat, chucked the camper shell and finally get it cleaned out enough to put it in my shop.

The engine seems to have some compression, and has some oil in it so I bought a battery from the junkyard, an electric fuel pump, some fuel line and a couple gallons of gas and for the first time since about 1992 she comes to life.

Does it count that this was a $500.00 truck when I bought it?

All of the problems that I thought were carb related, like the off idle stumble, magically went away after HEI was installed.

My carb actually was plugged, the acc pump squinter hole apparently is not much bigger than a pin head. That fixed the off idle stumble. I did just put HEI on it last weekend also.
