Re: GM Semis

Tim,

I believe it was in the mid 80's (somewhere around '85 or '86).

Bob,

I saw some of your comments here and there while I was researching it yesterday, but yes, let us know more on it.

Re: GM Semis

Not sure of the date of this article, I think it was around 1985:

http://magazines.marinelink.com/Maga...broader-201841

Deere was involved with the design of Detroit Diesel 60 series engines, and the plan was that Detroit would market mid-range Deere diesels for highway applications. The GMT-530 medium duty truck program (1990-2002 TopKick Kodiak) was intended to use Deere diesels, but when the Detroit/Deere joint venture fell through and GM sold Detroit to Penske, the 530 truck was designed to use the then-new Caterpillar 3116. It's an interesting 'what-might-have-been' scenario.

A very limited number of 1986/87 GMC C-6500's were built with the 5.9L Deere diesel in anticipation of the upcoming 1990 medium trucks. I was told they were made available to GMC commercial truck dealers as sort of an on-the-job test program. I have seen one!

Re: GM Semis

Very interesting. Back then I used to say my thing was Chevy, JD, HD, and GMC. If that had flown it would have fit right in.

I have another brochure coming, Canadian '70 MD/HD Trucks

Re: GM Semis

I didn't know the history of why the Caterpillar 3116 in GM trucks, but it turned out to be one of the most expensive nightmares I have ever had.

I had some Cat 3116's, and that is undoubtedly the worst piece of mechanical engineering I have had the pleasure to maintain.

I didn't do too bad with them. Also ran a lot of the later 3126/C7 versions. Parts are expensive though.

Re: GM Semis

We still have some 3126's and haven't had any trouble with them.

The wrecker sitting in the tall and uncut warms my heart pretty good. I also like the (olive?) green Jimmy-C tractor.

Re: GM Semis

I love that truck...409! The owner is a great guy to work for, coming from his drivers. The Marmon in the background is his and the driver hired my buddy to touch up some pinstripe and letter something like his name or "Class of...". When the guy went to hand Chuck his money Chuck told him his boss already paid. I know it's his truck anyway, but still was a cool gesture I witnessed

Another picture and some of his other stuff:
