Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Thanks for the compliments. I'm still working on refining the attachment to the door. I'm going to order some of that 3M Dual Lock re-closeable tape that Hart_rod suggested. I thought I would give it a shot. I received my registration for the Cache Valley Cruise-in. I've got 4 months to finish my interior. It would be nice to see some of the local board members there if you are in the area.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Well I got a little work done today. I put the drivers side door panel back together. I also used a 1/4'' bolt threaded inside out to attach the handle. Then I put a 1/4'' inch nut on the outside inside the handle. I will make a cover to hide the 1/4'' nut. I also stretched vinyl over the passenger kick panel. Next I'll make a peace to fit between the two passenger doors.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Well I've been waiting for my Dual lock tape to arrive so I made two panels for the tail gate. They will have a pattern like the doors and be attached by the dual lock tape. The tape showed up last night. I bought ten feet by 1''. I'll say the stuff Is pretty strong. I also ordered some new door handles of Ebay. Here the are. Last weekend I bout a Pioneer DEN-P3900MP deck for a little under 100 bucks. I also ran the speaker wires to the front and back. So far sounds good I just need an amp and some subs.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

I also made a spacers for the window crank and door handle. I used a 2'' hole saw and a step bit for the center. I also made a 1/4'' spacer for the window crank using a 2 1/2'' hole saw and then covered in vinyl. Looking back I wished That I had made the holes smaller on the door panels. I also removed the plastic clips and replaced them with Dual lock tape on the front door. Between the bolt through the handle and the tape, the door panel is not going anywhere.

Hey just a word of advice: If you haven't already, seal the back sides of your door panels with something; wood/deck seal maybe. If you don't that pressed board will absorb humidity over time and expand/warp.

Thanks. Those are 15x8" American Eagle wheels with BF Goodrich 295/50/15 tires.

So many panels to make I am kind of getting bogged down but I will get to it. I need to pick up some more vinyl before I can go any further.

Right now I am in the process of putting a Flow Master muffler on. I want to make a rumble when I drive... right now all I hear is the engine fan.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

All right we finally got some good weather. I welded up my Flowmaster... sounds so much better. Another small problem, my starter was not engaging. I thought I might need a new one, but after a closer look the bolts were just loose.

I did a little work on the panels. I made a peace to fit in the spare tire hole out of 1/2 plywood. I'm still working on the indent under the window. I'm thinking of either a filler peace or make it part of the panel. I also finished the A pillar piece. More pics.

Thanks a lot. I try to get something done everynight, sometimes it doesn't work out, I'm lucky if I can squeeze in a half hour.

I am really looking forward to the shows this summer, most of my show friends haven't seen what I've done to the burb since last summer. They will be shocked!

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Thanks Rokcrin. It's hard not taking on another project and staying focused on my suburban. I don't know you manage as many projects as you do. I've been watching your suburban 4 door build, it's gonna be sweet! l'm keeping mine a 3dr, I think its funny when I tell my kids to go to the driver's side passenger door and they get mad.

I made some progress today, I finished my tailgate panel, but you'll have to wait a bit for the photos, my server is gonna be down, so my pictures will disappear. I'll post pictures on Monday night.

I sprayed truck bed-liner in the spare well. I also made a couple of panels for the sides of the tailgate and covered the top one in vinyl.

Hey maybe we can swap rear panel trim. I need another short one, and it looks like you could use another long one. I'll have to check to be sure that's gonna work, but might be a win-win. I also have the piece that goes between the drivers-side split.

You just might have something there. Look into it and let me know what you find out. I don't see why you couldn't flip it around and use it on the other side.

Thanks kyull. It'll be no time before yours is painted and you'll be doing your interior.

Today I went and looked at a '71 Cheyenne long bed that I would like to convert into a short bed. Just have to convince the wife. She's right next to me now, should I ask her? We all need a project right? I mean, the suburban is almost done and I need something to keep me busy.

Well some how she said yes! I picked it up Monday night. It's a 71 Cheyenne long bed with a 350/350, no A/C and power steering. It also came with a short bed frame. Here it is:

Thanks a lot. I've been really busy this week--but mostly with the other truck! My wife's uncle was parting out a '70 GMC and I've been picking anything that was salvagable off of it. I have made some progress on the Suburban, I did get some good parts to use on the suburban, like door handles, sun visors, etc. I guess I need to update my pictures.
