Can somebody run this frame stamp so I can see if my conclusions are correct:
5S141205 I'm mainly concerned about what year it is. Thanks |

My 1962 VIN's sixth digit (assembly plant) is an "L". It doesn't match any of the assembly plants listed. What the L?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
I got a number off the left front frame just in front of the a-frame. 5S203265. Can anyone decipher this? I looked at a GM site and it said the S was for school bus. I don't think this short wheel base step side truck was a school bus...................was it?
Thanks Ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Well now I have a dilemma. The title I was provided says the VIN number is 4C144S118226. Does anyone know how to trace this down? There was not a VIN tag on the door opening. I was told I am the third owner of this vehicle. Can anyone tell me some of the differences between a 64 and 65? I took the motor out and according to my engine guy it was a 65 283. But he did say that it could of been a late year 64 with a early built 65 283. Just something sounds fishy here.

Does anyone know who can do a title search on the partial number I got off the frame?
Thanks Ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
ser# that you did show(frame) should match what your documentation but that doesn't seem to be the case does it. sometimes you have to look at the top of the door jam to see a vin plate.
by the sounds of it perhaps you should go and ask for your money back unless the PO can straighten up the documentation and make it legal. ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Well I have talked to the PO and he said that number was the one given to him in 2009. And he was not aware of any other numbers. The frame did have a lot of oil and dirt on the frame so I believe what he said. He has registered it every year and said no one has ever said anything to him about it. He is going to try and find the original owner to see what they say about it. I tried putting the number( on the title) in and it showed up in the data base. I put the number in off the frame with a 5c144 before it and it showed up nothing in the nation wide data base. I am going to go to the Texas DMV and have them do a title history search done on both numbers to see what that tells me. The truck has a current registration on it until 1-15 and when I transferred the title they did not say a thing about it. ??????
Also the tag is not on the door frame. The saga continues. Thanks for the reply. Ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Well going to the DMV today to try and get this straightened out. They can do a certified history of the title on both vehicles. Will let you know what I find. Thanks for the info padresag. Once I find out then I will approach the PO and see what we can do to get this straight. I really like the truck as it is really a solid truck for 49 years old or 50 which ever it is........

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Another question, if I have figured this right and the number I found on the frame is 5s203265 if I was to request a title search would the number I give them be C1445S203265? As when I submit this to a title search site it comes back as none found. Now when I submit the number on the title of 4c144s118226 it does come back as having found it? Am I submitting the number on the 65 wrong?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
It most likely was a truck, a "4", but here are some other options that it could be,:
"2" -- Chassis & Cowl "3" -- Chassis & Cab "4" -- Pickup "5" -- Panel "6" -- Suburban "9" -- Platform/Stake

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Well going to the DMV on Good Friday was not a good idea................duh! Will have to go sometime next week. I was told that if I take the number off the frame and that number has not been registered in the last 10 years they will provide me with a new title and identification tag. I hope that is the case as like you say padresag I do not want to get into a problem down the line if, heaven forbid, I ever got into a bad accident with it.
Thanks again for the information padresag. Ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Maybe someone can help identify this frame? Truck VIN from the cab is C1546Zxxxxxx which is clearly a 1966 1/2 ton long bed from the Fremont plant. The truck itself is actually a short bed fleetside and there are no signs the frame has been altered to make it a short bed. I don't see any numbers on the frame in the normal places for that year. The only number on the frame I can find is on the left rail just under the door, but on the outward facing side of the rail not on top. Hard to read that whole number but here's a picture below.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Found this number on the left frame rail of my 1963 C10 (in work) but it appears like some of the numbers are missing. What would the "J" mean?. The VIN tag is removed and lost.

The VIN is normally (from what I have seen/read) on the top of the frame rail just in front of the steering box mount or most likely on top of the frame under the driver's door area. It is really hard to tell a lot of times. There seems to be lots of variations/discrepancies on this...especially between the plants.
