Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Hey Cort,
I think I have a spare set of hood light housings, do you need a set?

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Look #1 is coolest, but provides no filtering for the incoming air.
Look #2 is practical, but nowhere near as good looking. With all the old Fords in the Pacific Northwest you have not been able to find an old truck with the scoop I posted up for you yet? |

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
I guess I'm not looking in the right places? Everytime I see a big COE or 2 ton truck, I always check to see if it is an old ford but, alas, no scoop.....
I guess I need to try evil bay....

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
If you had bigger round filters, say those 6" ones(?), I'd go with that.
But, if not, the velocity stacks for sure! And they have a little filter in them, if their like the ones I saw on a car a few months ago. Last edited by texanidiot25; 07-14-2009 at 11:55 PM. |

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Right now there is just a screen in the velocity stacks for " big debris". There is a company making little disk filters that drop down into the stacks though.....If I drive any distance, I put on the air filters then take them off and put the stacks on when I reach the destination. Only takes a couple seconds....
Here is a link to the filters: http://www.thehotrodcompany.com/shop...oduct_id=md001 And here is a link of another type of filter I was thinking about running: http://www.thehotrodcompany.com/shop...oduct_id=obc15

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
An option for air filters, but you already cut the hood. Some of the early Novas with the six had an oilbath filter that used a sheet metal duct going over the valve cover. I have seen pictures, but I couldn't locate any.
I also remembered the filter setup on the 1957 Chrysler 300. Found a picture.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Yeah those are cool filters. I wanted to cut the hood though. But now that I get to see what it looks like.......Those velocity stacks sticking out sure show you how "big" those hoods are.....Back to the drawing boards....

I keep thinking that 6 of those would look cool coming through the hood.

Or... though it doesn't appeal to me on your truck, it's straight '60's vintage stuff... one of the Mr. Gasket Injector style scoops. There are several styles along this line. You'd likely have to make a base to fit your carb spacing.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
I like that edmunds filter.....I'll have to look into that.
Here is a shot with the 62-66 style hood on it. Because these years of hoods are raised in the center instead of dropping in the center like the 60-61 hoods, the carbs come exactly flush with the hood skin: Notice how off center the carbs sit....The holes in the hood are even, the engine sits crooked I guess....

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
OK, so here is what I am thinking:
I got to looking at the hood on the truck and kinda liked how there is two flush holes in the hood going into the carbs. I think that's pretty bad a*s. But since the engine doesn't sit square, I can't leave it like that because 1, it isn't astheticaly pleasing and 2, there is no filtration. So now I'm thinking about making a design out of stainless steel wire mesh screen that is consistent with the hood lines and put it over the holes. That will cover up the carbs and still look BA. Then I will make a plate that sits over both carbs and has a weather seal on it to mate to the hood like a true cowl induction. In the plate will be those filter discs I mentioned earlier. I'll use wire mesh like this: http://www.stylepark.com/db-images/c..._488_336-1.jpg, with a finer mesh underneath it. What do you think?

Also, take the bottom adapter out and cut it down as much as you can so you can get a late model style panel air filter between the hood and the carbs.

That would look sick, but it has to be something that was available before '63.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
OK, photoshop guys please don't throw up. But this is just to get an idea of what to do....
The mesh would be considerably smaller of course and the frame would look better, maybe a little chrome strip.

I like the flush mount mesh idea... what about running the mesh inside the "v" bevel front to back, it would look like a big chrome stripe....

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
A couple of thoughts. Since the engine moves due to the flex in the motor mounts, you need to allow for that movement. I would recommend enlarging the holes in the hood and make a plate that allows for a seal between the carbs and the hood.
As for what to do on the outside. Looking at the hood, you could make a scoop that uses the vee. Start at the front and raise the top, following the lines of the steps in the hood that are inboard of the turn signals. Leave it open at the back for air. It is a lot of metalwork, but would definitely look different. You could also do the same thing, but localizing the fill to just the cutout area. Add another vee at the start and go from there.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
Those ideas are exactly what I was thinking. But, then again, I got to thinking about driving in the rain. I would be screwed. I'm going to have to just try and find one of those scoops off of the Ford super duty trucks, like you said Jon. That will be the most practical, era correct and look good too!
I'll probably end up putting that scoop on the 60-61 hood, and then patching and selling the 62-66 hood.

Re: 305 V-6 with dual Strombergs
OK, change #35. I removed the adapter that goes from the rochester to the Stromberg bolt pattern. That took out about an inch and a half of the overall height. I spent about 4 hours today custom making an adapter plate out of 3/8" aluminum plate. It turned out awesome! My throttle linkages are much smoother, I have more pedal and I think the truck has more power.
So now I have about 1 1/2" clearance between the top of the carbs and the 62-66 hood. I haven't put the 60-61 hood back on to see what clearance I have yet, but I bet it'll be about an inch or so. So, now I can start fabricating a filter housing that will take the filter discs and have a weather stripping to mate to the hood. I think I am going to go with the 60-61 hood after all.
