Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
Tried some rust prevention ideas on the new front fender. I cut a copper tab to fit under the support. It is sloped to divert the dirt entering from the top. Seam sealer was used to fill the gap at the front edge of the support that faces the tire. I left the two weep holes at the bottom of the support open. Then coated everything with 3M undercoating.

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
nice work!
I drilled a hole at the very bottom under the lowest mounting bolt to let any water or dirt drain out and keep it from rusting out |

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
It doesn't look much different, but it is. My basic primer process so far is grey epoxy primer, then tan high build primer sanding with 120, high build and 180, high build and 320. Then I go over everything lightly with 400 or maroon scuff pad depending on if it's flat or hard to sand. If I sand through to metal then I spray grey epoxy first. If I was an experience body man, I probably would have used fewer layers of high build. It is amazing to see the body get better every time. I have many of the parts completely sanded. The hoods, hatch, and body are on the last sanding (I hope).
It's nice to use the two colors. As soon as the tan looks transparent I stop. |

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
Question: Why are you prepping two different hoods?

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
I bartered for a second hood thinking it was in better shape than the one I had. It turned out to be similarly rusted and dented. Each took 5-6 metal sections to be replaced. I decided to use it as my auto body practice hood and try each step out on it first. It's come to the point that I'll just put the best one on my burb.
On an interesting note, I did find that the two hoods are slightly different. One is a 60 and the other a 61. It might be due to the year or a different manufacturing plant. The angle of the slope down to the middle flat section is steep on one and more rounded on the other. |

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
I sealed my drip rails with Eastwood's 2K self leveling seam sealer. You do need to use it pretty fast so it doesn't harden in the mixing tube. It worked really well in all the flat areas. It took 2 tubes to do the entire drip rail. I used a thicker seam sealer first in the rear corners where the drip rail has a steep incline. A little wax and grease remover on paper towels was used to clean any mistakes as I progressed.
The burb is now in the paint boot and I hope to spray the interior this weekend. |

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
The inside and outside are now painted. The interior colors are the very close matches to the original metallic silver and metallic charcoal. I did a clear gloss finish over everything and then went back with a flat clear over the dash. I still have 2 more loads to paint in the booth. I hope to have that done this week.

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
I love that body line paint. I just read through your whole build. Seems like you've got it together. I'd love to get the same two tone set up on my '60 but with a flat original yellow and white up top. I'll be checking back in on this one for sure.

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
I found a business online that will replace the webbing in my seatbelts. I think I'll go with charcoal webbing and then spray the plastic base with charcoal vinyl spray paint. I need to contact the company and make sure they will do it.

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
The paint is Nason spectramaster. They don't have names except the white , but the codes are:
Green GS069, white 546840 (India Ivory), silver metallic 658282, charcoal metallic 344708. I think the green looks like olive in the bright light and avocado in indirect light. |

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
I painted the last load in the paint booth and started on interior assembly. I did find a piece of the steering column that I forgot to paint.

Re: Mike's 60 Suburban build
I've been bolting everything back together. I still have all the glass to do and my high beams are not working. A relay went out, but it could be caused by a pinched wire.
All my door window felt is on back order. If I don't hear anything by tomorrow, I'll cancel my order and try another company. I did buy the felt and gaskets for the side slide window. I looked at them again and decided to postpone rebuilding them. I've been postponing other projects for 6 months and decided not to spend 1-2 weekends rebuilding the sliders now. I'll just bolt them back in and plan a rebuild when I do the headliner in the future. The bottom rail is rusted out and it looks like I'll need to replace it with new metal. I have an appointment with a glass shop to install the other 4 pieces of glass this Thursday. |
