Nice job. I would like to see pics of this one when finished.

VW's are my other passion.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build

It's leaving tomorrow morning, so I will take pictures of it when it comes off the lift. It doesn't sound like it's coming back for a while to get the rest done, as he has more parts collecting, planning, and saving to do.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build

Pictures of it outside. The rear wheels are on the front, because the Porsche axle is a bit wider than stock, and they didn't clear. He said he can get some more rear wheels with another +10mm offset to suck them in enough to clear.

And I started one of the control arms for my project. Pretty different than the norm.

Nice work on the double cab. Man that thing is clean looking.

Good looking start on those control arms also.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build

Upper arms are done, lower arms are about 70% done (should be 100% tomorrow) and I started building the LCA mounts. I boxed the front side, and above the bushing, I need to weld it to the frame on all sides of the tabs, and then put the boxing plates on the back.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build

I didn't finish the arms, but I finished the LCA mounts. I realized that they needed to be done before I could finish the bag mounts on the lower arm.

I just got the steering rack too, so I might get that mounted next week.

Control arms are finished at this point, until I add shocks mounts and some other things in the future.

Re: Not so budget 3-link build

I had an idea late last night, to build a boxed style gusset with a hole (tube) welded in the center of it. So today I cut out enough pieces to build 4, and got one welded together. It's way overkill, but I think it matches the arms well and I like it. Also you may notice in the last picture, the laser cut piece I got for the spindle with my crown logo on it.

Your work gets better every time I see you do something new. In post 187, you say its a teaser shot of the front end. I'm I missing something, it does not look like that spindle will rotate enough to turn the vehicle, or I am I just not seeing it? Even it that last picture, it just does not look like it will turn...

Re: Not so budget 3-link build

yeah he's got a super pivot joint on the bottom and a heim joint up top. Not sure how much angle he will get out of it but it will turn.

Think of it as side to side motion on a 4 link, These are the same parts!

Re: Not so budget 3-link build

You see more of those setups on the off road trucks....Personally its my favorite setup! you can get a lot of travel out of a vertical uni ball setup... plus it looks *****en!!!!!

I'm not sure what doesn't 'look' like it will not allow turning? I will take a stab at it.

It's got a vertical mounted Uniball on the bottom, and a vertical rod end on the top. There is no limitation to up and down travel, only to turning. But it still turns about 38 degrees in each direction, which is close to what a stock vehicle can do. It will limit me in tight U-turns a bit, but that's not a big deal. I am building it to have a narrow track width, so I will be able to make those wide U-turns without lifting the truck up.

The rod ends also act as a steering stop. Instead of having something on the spindle and arm that hit eachother. I originally had the upper set up as a 3/4" rod end with 1/2" misalignments, but it was turning too far, so I stepped up to 9/16" on the top. Now it limits the steering just before the tire hits the frame, which is perfect for me.

If I get the upper arm tacked on, I will throw the wheel on, turn it and take a picture.

I was curious about this when I first saw the pics but figured in time more info (& pics) would come forth. I assumed the uniballs limits would be the 'steering' stops. Cool, cutting-edge stuff for sure!
