Re: GM Semis

Well, I thought I was going to get this, but hauling it just is going to be too costly. Would love to restore this- maybe even convert to a 10 wheel tractor. Hope it goes to someone worthy.

Re: GM Semis

How about those two heavy Chevys in front with dual stacks? I bet they are 409s. Well, that's my guess. They appear to be that companies heavy hitters. Did GM put Toroflows in Chevys?

That got my attention too Tim. I'd have to check some of my books. They look like '65 Models.

Nice collection of Chevys.

Yes, they did. It looks like those tandems have Toro-Flow badges on their hoods too. Also the staining on the fuel tanks looks like diesel. The 478 Toro-Flow was the engine in the '65-'66 V-80 tandems.

The tanks have "diesel" written on them if you zoom in.

Caught my attention as well. Mid 60's 10 wheelers are on of my all time favorites!

I had to check the books too! I completely forgot about the Chevy tandem 80 series with the diesel. It is the V80 series vs. the M 80 series, which was the gas model. Check out the large front bumper, something I thought was a GMC only item, but apparently used on these heavy Chevies too.

Yep, you nailed it again. So accustom to seeing the GMC version, completely forgot about the Chevy counterpart. IMO, these trucks must be super rare today, they had very low production numbers when new.

Re: GM Semis

Wait a minute! That Astro 95 in CarolinaHD's post is another unicorn. Double bunk Astro 95, notice the extra long cab. Very sketchy history, some say GMC built 11 or so.

You guys do come of with some great pictures!

Hey Bob, I've been doing a little more digging and discovered it may be a '65 only cab design, which it would make it even more of a rare oddity. In '66, the conventional cab was replaced with the newer shorter cab design v80.

You are probably right, I don't have much '66 material. In '67, there was an MG60, which was a tandem with the 478 ToroFlow and the regular '67 light and medium duty cab. There was also a JJ80, which was a tandem with the 637 ToroFlow V-8 and the shorter (GMC built) cab. '66 was an odd year because it was the first year of the H/J series trucks which replaced many of the larger '60-up conventional cab trucks.

Re: GM Semis

Oh yeah, S.E. Rykoff. Big restaurant supply/grocer is Los Angeles, eventually became part of U.S. Foods. Rycoff was known for their large and impressively maintained fleet, most of which was GMC's for many years. Throughout the 60's and 70's, they ran a lot of Toroflow diesels, and supposedly got great service out of them. Remember seeing their pea-green trucks all over the place when I was a kid.

Either he was trying to go faster or he dropped his Moon Pie under the seat!
