How to find exhuast manifold leak?
I was working on my truck last night (timing and idle speed) and noticed a slight exhuast leak sound coming from the passenger side manifold, efe valve, or maybe the collector area. I couldnt tell for sure. Right when I rev'ed it up you can here it for a split second. Whats a good way for finding the leak? I plan to do the exhuast on the truck soon (I have everything I need), but was holding off so I could get the headers coated. Im real short on cash right now and will be for awhile so I may just paint the headers and put everything on. Even if I do just through everything on, it might not be for another month, so I would like to find the leak.
Anyone know any tricks for finding exhuast leak?

are your headers covered in the factory coating...that black stuff?
If so, you probably want to either sandblast, or run them for a week or so to burn that coating off. If you coat them now, it won't stay on the headers because it will stick to the coating they currently have, that will burn off quickly. Just a FYI. |

Gibble,
Yeah the headers have the shipping coating on them. If I paint them myself Ill strip them down to bare metal and paint them with high temp paint. When you get them coated the coating company sand blasts them and does all the prep work for you. That was the original plan. Maybe Ill run the headers painted for awhile, then when money isnt tight take em off and get them coated. I have a birthday company up in august, maybe I can get them coated I look into a stethoscope, I may have one in a box somewhere.

Stick a piece of fuel line in your ear, & run the other end around the suspected area. You can pinpoint the source real close when it gets loud all of a sudden.
