10 Mpg
my sons 84 c10 350/350 with 273's gets 10 miles per gallon. he really likes his truck, but i cant afford the gas! we have tried the 1406 edelbrock, the demon 525, and neither seems to run like it should. the engine has less than 2000 miles. it has an edelbrock intake. any ideas?

Sounds about normal to me. But it would help to know what all it has. Depending on what you have you might be able to get 2-3 more miles per gallon.
What size tires are on it also?

put on a fuel injection kit and swap in a 700r4, that should give you better mileage. kinda pricey though.

How does your son drive it? When I had that combo I was getting about 15MPG, but I had a 400 tranny.

Is most of his driving done in town with lots of stops. If so those gears are killing the milage. They are for highway cruising. I gained milage in my 85 by switching to 3.73's when I had a 305. Still got high teens on the freeway with those gears. And believe this, my blown 383 that I currently have gets 10mpg IN TOWN!

8mpg with a 305? I think thats the lowest i've ever seen out of one. Mine never got that low even with the truck loaded down full of cement.

Thats 10mpg on the highway or in town. the cam is stock. the exhaust is stock, the engine is a 30 over reman. If i changed the gears, what would be a good ratio to run. He does mainly run in town now. not much stop and go. ive watched him drive, and he only ocasionaly gets in it.

His mileage may also be affected by how he drives it when you aren't watching. I always drove much more conservatively around my dad.
