starter grinding like crazy
hey guys and gals... heres another one of my tiny stupid porblems that i go to you with... the starter on my my 454... its very small.... which is great, because... so much easier to shim when it is lighter... it has the diagnol bolt pattern.... its amini starter i am pretty sure... but..i go to start and the gear sticks to the fly... i am not sure why... so i go to shim....i put a lot in... and it was too many the starter just tuned itself not the motor... haha that was funny... now i take em out and i put in about 3..and it sounds worse... shoudl i just keep doin the trial and error stuff...adding taking away.... i dont knwo what it coudl be.. it s new starter... meh.. its funny goign to you guys with this stupid sh*t...dont laugh too hard....

Sounds to me like the pinion gear on the starter isnt engaging the teeth of the ring gear enough. In which case you need to cut a shim in half (or thirds or maybe even a quarter) and just shim the outter starter bolt.. That will rotate the pinion into the ring gear. I would try 2 shims and see where you're at..
