replacing wiper/cruise/turn signal selector...how hard? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My 1990 Burbs wiper/cruise/turn signal selector lever is pretty worn and none of the text is legible anymore so I want to replace it with a new one.
I saw one at my local O'Riellys auto parts store for $30....are these any good?
Do I have to remove the steering wheel to replace this?

It looks like just one wire to plug in, and the end of the shaft is round, how is this held in?

As you can see I need any and all the help I can get with this

wow so those things really are as huge as they look in LMC

I don't think its that hard to put in, not sure HOW it goes in, but my dad had my teeny turn signal lever out to install a horn button on it (don't ask)

Just yank the old one loose from the steering column, cut the wire at the lever, tape your new lever's wire to the old one and then pull it through the column with the old wire. Then just push it in and swap the connectors at the base of the column.

Not clear of exactly what your saying.....the lever actually has a wire connector and it doesnt appear to be very long so I dont see how I could pull much thru, its about a 5" long wire with a female connector on it.

As far as the lever is concerned....so your saying it just snaps in....no c-clip or anything else holding it in place?

Yeah my bad i was thinking of another model. But your lever should just pull out, be careful not to break the end when pulling it though, it's a pain to get out if that happens.

Be careful of just pulling it out. I was just reading some posts about this the other day and everything I read indicated that you have to pull the wheel and remove the plastic cover around the lever. There's a large philip head screw located on the column that you need to be able to get to.

Hopefully yours is easier since it's a newer model.

If I remember right you need to pull the steering wheel but I could be wrong.

NO Do not remove the steering wheel

You will have to push it in a litlte and then twist it i dont remember wich direction but it pops right out the wire runs trough the colum and connects under the dash

What i advise is get some small wire tie it to the hole in the end of the old cord Put a little black tape on it so it wont get snagged even twist the wire around pull it out and then attach it to the new one the same way Thats how i fished mine down in there.

FYI That phillips screw only attachs a lever to the switch itsself the turn signal stalk has a keyway so to speak on it and it removes and looks just like his new one.
