Oldsmobile engine casting number identification
Hi Guys ,
Sorry to annoy you again with my numbers , but I found the casting number on the Olds engine I have into my Burb I did a search on the net , and as the casting numbers for the Chevrolet engines are easily available in books , for the Olds ones , it seems almost impossible to get ( or I'm too stupid to find the right site ) the casting numer is 554965 2A ( that 2A being bigger in size ) this all because I'm convinced that my engine is 350ci , but it could be also a 307 or a lesser cubing engine ( 260 ? ) BTW , I have EGR on it , so I presume a 307 is out of the question... I was unable to read the serie number on the engine , too muddy/greasy & I'm not a contortionist either ... Thanks y'all the Baron

www.442.com (FAQ section) has the most complete listings of Olds casting numbers (anything from carbs to oil pans to heads you name it) and i was unable to find your code there.
The block casting number is located to the right of the oil fill tube, on top of the timing chain cover (behind the water pump). This is what you need to identify your engine since all Olds heads from 1964 to 1990 are interchangeable (to a point anyway). 2A refers to 260 (YUCK!) heads, sorry to say. Tiny, tiny valves and runners. Boat anchors and nothing more. EGR was found in pretty much all small and big blocks so do not rule anything out. 307s especially had EGR. All Olds blocks from about 1977 onwards have their displacement cast into the side of the block (very noticeable) .

According to this RockHQ is right, it's a 260.
