What would you offer ? SWB 4x4
I found someone with a swb 4x4 project truck 4 sale, and was wondering what you guys think a fare offer would be. The truck is NOT a matching #s truck.
72 swb frame sand blasted & por15 3/4 ton front & rear diffs (DH44 & 14 bolt I think ) 3/4 ton drive shafts 700r4 tranny ( beefed up ) ( Said cost him $1,100 ) 208 transfer case 70 cab nees rockers only nice swb fleet side bed ( diamond plate floor ) 70 nose ? on condition rebuilt 350 stock, still on stand new rear drums & disc kit also Blazer tank in frame 2-1/2 soft ride lift kit This truck has been garaged for the last ten yrs while he's been working on it. It,s current state is a rolling chasis with the cab, tranny & transfer case on it. The rest is in parts. Said he has $9,000 into it. Does not have a match vin tag. He has sent some pic's, hard to tell mutch from them. He is going to send more. The truck is about a 5 hr drive to look at it. What do you think would be a fare range, high to low would be for this truck. Any input would be appreciated. Gary |

My Sig For Pic's, This Might Give You An Idea, It Might Not, I Can Tell You Without Detailed Pic's It Will Be Hard For Anyone From This Board To Validate The Value Of That Project Correctly.

I don't think this truck is in the condition that yours is, but I do think it's a solid PROJECT. I expect I'll need to purchase additional parts, complete the assembly and paint it. It's the vin tag that bothers me. I've done a complete ground up before so I no what's involved. It's more what's the value with out the vin tag.

Gary, Mine Is Not All O.E. Either, But It All Matches The Vin Tag
Pretty Well, Except The Motor, You Can Always Find Vin Tags, I Just Sold A Title And Vin Tag To Someone For This Very Purpose. (Mine is a complete frame off, every last detail been gone through, tub was disassembled, media blasted, rust prevented, and primed.)

Maybe it's just me, but not having a matching VIN is HUGE. I would expect to give much much less for that then a comprable project with a good VIN.

Project truck
Bobalouie & 67c10step
Bobalouie: Nice truck !!!!! My current truck was originaly the same color as yours, it was a step side swb 4x4. I have owned it since 83 and it has gone trough 2 resterations in that time. It's currently blue, with a wood bed on it. I'm looking to collect all the parts to restore it once again, this time I'll keep it out of the salt & snow. 67c10step: Not having the correct vin tag is what's bothering me about this truck. As you said the price should be lower than a matching #s truck. He told me he has about $9,000 into the truck as it sits, but he's only asking $5,500 for it. It still needs lots of work and parts to complete, I would expect to have close to $10,000 into it by the time it would be done, and not have the correct vin. It would be a very nice truck but the value of it would be low due to the vin tag. Not that I plan on selling it, but having the correct vin would help to protect my investment. Gary Does anyone have a swb 4x4 vin tag & tittle for sale ???? Last edited by CUSTOM/10; 09-22-2004 at 09:10 PM. |

If I understand the issue (cab's VIN is not a K vin plate) thenI'm not sure why this matters to you other than as a bargaining chip to get a better price. You're in NH and the truck is exempt from title laws. You only need a bill of sale to legally register it, and at least where I live, noone cross-references VINS.
As far as protecting the investment, from your description the truck is not a factory stocker (3/4 ton running gear etc) so it'll never have "numbers matching" value from a collector's standpoint. Being a 4x4 and in the northeast and rust-free will give it value. As far as resale without a title, it's a mute point. As I've stated NH exempts older vehicles and as such the other 49 states have to abide by our laws. I've bought and resold a few non-titled vehicles for boardmembers in the past to get them around their state's more restrictive laws. Once it's "owned" in an exempt state, a purchaser in a state that requires paperwork, need only have a bill of sale and a copy of NH DMV's exempt statute to re-title. Anyway, good luck

Well, I know people that have had issues here in Michigan regarding non-matching VIN numbers etc on old vehicles. Sounds like it is OK in other states.

Project Truck
That would be 5hrs in what direction from NH?
As already stated, it's already so far from "stock" what's the big deal on the vin tag? Sounds like a nice project. Take a friend or your wife (if applicable) on a day trip and check it out in person. Bring your trailer just in case it's really nice, save yourself a trip. A friend, a trailer and a day trip ( Not the wife, she just dosen't understand ) will be aranged. I'm waiting on some additional pic's and another phone conversation to negotiate the price. I guess I'm just looking for ways to get around the vin tag issue.

If it had a vin tag, that price would be a really good deal. It just depends on what the laws are in your state. Personaly, since I live in californa, I would not even think about buying something with no vin tag, but it sounds like it may not matter where you live.

I'm going to give the NH DMV a call to see what they say about a vehicle that was built up from parts of different trucks.

I spoke with NH DMV
Here's what the NH DMV told me! I would have to take the vehicle to NH salvage inspection station, where a registry officer would perform an inspection on the vehicle and take down any info he could find ( just to have on record ) and they would issue a NH VIN to the vehicle that would be a legal VIN number to be used for the remainder of the trucks existance.
He also said it would be a valid # to be used if the truck was sold in any other state. The number would not bet a CK##### number, he said it would start with NH and a series of numbers following that. So it would not be a " Matching Numbers Truck " but it would be legal. Gary |
