Steering gear box ?
Hey all,
My blazer is tough as hell to keep in control if I am going over 30 mph. It wants to wander all over the place and I was wondering if this is a gear box problem. There seems to be quite a bit of "play", very unresponsive. I am only running 33`s and everything besides the gear box is new or in great shape. Also, are they rebuildable ? All info would be very much appreciated ! Bret |

If your sure everything in the front end is new and you have double, triple checked to make sure nothing is loose or worked its way out of spec then it probably is your steering box. Big tires, even 33s, are real hard on components. After 30 odd years, everything starts to go. I'm not sure about being able to rebuild your steering box at home, may need specialized tools. I've not had to tackle that one yet. I know that for me personnally, I would buy a rebuilt one, I would feel safer, that's a pretty important component. Buy a rebuilt one, and save yourself the hassle of rebuilding your own. I've heard that you can still buy new ones from GM for the newer 2nd generation Blazers up to 91. They have a faster ratio but have metric fittings that will need new hoses built for it. Buy a new style pump as well....

My box will actually slip from time to time....yeah, I know...dangerous. If i go through a tighter turn and hit a bump.....it will give and slip about 10 degrees of steering...quite sporting when it does it.....I need a new one too....I thought you wanted a variable box like ours with such a short wheelbase??????

I bought a rebuilt power steering box for my Jimmy from kragon Auto for under $200.00 . I have 33's and I can steer with my knee and eat a sandwich. Replace the rag joint (shaft coupler) also. Have someone move your steering wheel back and forth hard while you look at all the steering components carefully for wear. Have you checked the alignment toe in?
