HELLLLPPP Engine start up probs

I jsut tried to fire my new 454 and it starts and runs for a minute and makes a harsh backfire thru the carb and dies ?? Ignition timing? valves adjsuted incorrectly?
Im getting ready to leave for work offshore for two weeks and wanted to at least break in the cam before i go andy help would be great

Do you maybe have an intake valve sticking. or timing could be off
or maybe even an air leak
