I was at the "Pipe Shop" today discussing this issue. We decided shortly after the manifold down-turn and somewhere where it won't get in the way of the transmission pan. In general, the belief at the shop was further up front is better.

The exhaust pro's say take a piece of tire chalk and mark a straight line on pipe starting 12" from collector to 24" back on pipe, then start motor and watch for where chalk burns off at beginning of point where chalk does not burn off is where you should place the front edge of H-pipe to optimize its effect. They say that average point is approx. 18" from collector.
