How many with steering box leak?

I've got a pretty severe leak at the upper end of my steering box. I have to refill the power steering fluid every 3 days or so. The fluid blows all over the place when I'm driving.

By the way, in case you're wondering, my truck is a 1984 K10 Silverado.

I have a couple of questions I was hoping I might get answers to here:

1) Is this a common problem?

2) Is it feasible to rebuild the box or am I better off just getting a new one. If rebuilding is a good option, where would I get a rebuild kit?

3) Are the steering boxes the same regardless of 4WD or 2WD, or are they different parts?

Hi Chad, you may want to ask this on the message boar side instead of the parts side, you'll get more response there.
Where is it leaking, at the top? A mechanic friend of mine unbolted mine and had the seal replaced, I was going through a a quart every week also.
You should be able to get a rebuild kit at NAPA, Autozone, Checker/Kragan, or any other supply store

I didn't have any luck finding a rebuild kit for mine here. I tried a box from the junkyard and it leaked worse than my original (also set me back $100). I was lucky though, 86k10 had a new one on ebay that I got for $80. . Good luck!

Oh yeah I forgot- the 2wd and 4wd are different.

In case you need to buy some time, I have found that NAPA power steering stop-leak works better than the rest, but it also costs more.

Mine Leaks Right out the Back of it where the rag joint hooks on Im told the seal is only 15 dollars and fairly simple to put in .. Depending on where yours is leaking could just need a seal .. Dont really need a rebuild if a seal can fix the leak.

edelman has what you need...it sounds like the input shaft seal is what is leaking. get it fixed soon because the leak will take out suspension parts quick. bushings dont like oil and it will wash the grease out of the ball joints and tie rods. btw edelman is a brand of power steering parts manufacturer. get someone else to look it up at napa. sometimes you can get a person who doesnt know and is too proud to ask. the part # is either 1095 or 1097 if i remember right. it shouldnt be any more than about 15 bucks at the most. there is a dust cover then a snap ring then the seal. i use picks and a small hammer to tap through the seal.use the straight pick to puncture the seal, then slide the 90 deg. pic in to pull the seal with a pair of dykes. grip with dykes and pry up. i do them right in the rig!! saves time. just be careful not to score the input shaft. good luck, i hope this helps.

Yeah the P/O aparently let it leak forever it was hella filthy around there and the sway bar bushing had been changed to a poly that was coming apart .

Its on my list of things to do
