Rear Axle Question...

Are rear axles the same from a 71 4WD rear axle, to a 67-68 2wd rear axle? both are 6 lug... The 4 WD measures 31-9/32 long. Both use same outer wheel bearings and seals? Any thoughts? I wouldn't think so, but....?

Is the 67-68 2wd rear axle a Corporate 12-bolt or a Dana 44?

I don't belive the 2WD 6-lug Corporate 12-bolt axles interchange with the '71 4WD axles.

I copied and pasted this from an earlier post:
"According to the hollander interchange the 70 - 72 axels on GM 12 bolts are 31-11/32" long and the 67-69 are 30-1/4"."

axles

The axles from a 70 truck will work. The earlier years are too short. Any other 72-81 4wd axles will work also as long as it is a 12 bolt.

OK,...So

Are 71-72 4WD axles (6 lug) and 71-72 2WD axles (5 lug) the same length. being the 31-9/32 or 31-11/32 length...
I'm not doing any projects with this info. It's just a curiosity...

axles

I thought they were the same lenght, but I don't mess with much 4wd stuff. Before I finish my shoe ,maybe another 4wd guy will give you better info than I did. Sorry. I thoght a 12 bolt was a 12 bolt in a truck.I have however used 5 lug axles in a 70 housing.
