Fuel consumption reality check.

Since we have not hooked up the tank(s) to the fuel pump until we get them dropped and clean, we filled a bottle with gas to move my son's 83 to the shop. A whopping 110 feet. Used half the bottle. (20 oz bottle). Getting it back to the house used the whole thing. Needless to say, he is realizing dad may be right is suggesting a stock motor for his truck. The truck came with a new, unstarted motor. 350 bored .30. Ported and polished heads port matched to a Torquer intake with a Holley 750 a descent cam, rebuilt TH350 with a kit and 2500 stall. Granted, the short trip felt great, but the fuel use finally opened his eyes.

eh, it's all in the gearing....I'd spend $ on a 700R4 or a add-on overdrive unit before I'd pull that engine for a stock one (which won't do that much better on fuel anyhow)

Truck originally had a 305 with 700R tranny. The guy we bought it from bought the body only and was building it to race. The plans are to build a nice 350 and put a 700R back in it. We are to the poing now that we desperately need a replacement in-cab wiring harness complete with the power door wiring. When we pulled the inst. panel to investigate why the gauges did not work, we found a nitemare or melted wires due to what appears to be, a very bad stereo install.

It's a 10 bolt, hopefully he didn't put gears like that in it. I do have a 12 bolt sitting in the shop. Not sure if I'm going to be keeping it or not.
