factory radio question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

How do the factory knob style radios mount in our trucks? I know there are nuts that screw to the knob shafts that secure the front of it to the dash, but are there brackets for the rear of it? If so, does anyone have a picture of it/them?

I cant remember, i still have the Factory AM radio that came out of my 73, i'll try and track it down and snap some pictures tommorow.

Jeff, I pulled the original AM radio from my 74 a couple of years ago & there was no rear mounting strap like newer radios have. It was held in place by the shaft nuts only.

On my 87 it has a support on the right side of the radio, I might go take a pic later as my dash is laying in pieces.

Jeff....there is a bracket on all factory gm radios in our trucks. I might still have one at the house but i'm out in the jonah field right now on a job. When i get home i'll look see.

Yeah, there's a support bracket that runs from the radio and down to the base of the metal dash. If you absolutely can't get one, you could fab one up using flat bar.

I couldn't find the radio, it may be out in the shed, i'll check again tommorow. Im not sure if i re-used the bracket or not, i did the swap out back in 01 and haven't seen the radio in a while. Now, your talking about the support bracket on the back of the radio right? Because if so, my service manual indicates that there were two types of brackets that were used. An L shaped bracket for the AM radio, and a U shaped bracket for the factory AM/FM, both held in place by two bolts on the bottom of the dash.

As i remember theres a 1/4" or 5/16" round bracket thats flattened at each end and bent at 90* or 45* something close to it. One end attaches to the back of the radio and the other to the bottom of the dash.

I still have mine somewhere! I cant throw anything away cuz ya may need it id give it to ya but it's like 200 miles north of me right now.

Hey Joe, is the bracket an AM/FM bracket or AM? I have a AM/FM radio. I didn't know there was a diff. Thanks Ironclad.

Your welcome. I believe either one will work, I used the stock AM bracket on my AM/FM.

The bracket I sent is the simple L shaped one. I have one of the u-shaped ones on one of my extra Gentleman Jim AM/FM 8-tracks, but I haven't seen them used on the other radios I have.

The one I sent came from a 1986 digital AM/FM cassette radio. It is still available from GM under part number 6270444 and lists for 4.78.

Here are some pics to show how original radios are mounted.

Screw under the dash. The holes in line with the bolt head are all factory.

Here are some of the radios I have. Top is an NOS Gentleman Jim 8 track, next is an NOS digital AM/FM 8 track, next is an AM/FM/CB from an 82 suburban, next is the AM/FM from my old 87 diesel and the bottom is a digital AM/FM cassette from an 87 Suburban.
