Re: wheels and tires 72 swb road and strip truck?
15x10 with a 5.5" backspace will fit on the back no cutting. I had 295/50's for tires on with that rim and lot's of room. I had my 28x14.5's on there that have a section width of 13.2 and they rubbed a bit when turning on inclines. They did not rub with the stiffer stock suspension, but with my 4-link the rear pivots alot easier and it rubbed.

Re: wheels and tires 72 swb road and strip truck?
It will be difficult to find a 15x7, with a 4-1/2 inch back space. You can get them by special ordering from some places, like American Racing. But, expect to pay a premium for them.
Most of the 15x7 and 15x8's will have a 4-inch back space. The 15x10's could have either a 4-1/2 or 5-inch back space, depending on the wheel. I'm going with 15x8 6-lug Vette-style ralley wheels on the front, and the same style in a 10-inch width on the back. Plan to use a 275R60-15 on the back and a 225R70-15 on the front. I asked the tech guys at Early Classic (where my suspension came from) about the back space that I should be running. They say that a 4-inch b/s is good for 15's, but anything larger in diameter should go to a 4-1/2-inch b/s.

Re: wheels and tires 72 swb road and strip truck?
Thanks for the interest in my truck. The wheels are Centerline Telstars. They are 15X10 with 5 inch backspacing. The tires are BFG drag Radials 345/55/15's. The rear has a 4 inch drop spring and 2 inch block. 6 inch total. The front has 3 inch drop spindles and a 2 inch drop spring. Also has tubular A arms in front. 4 wheel disc brakes.

Re: wheels and tires 72 swb road and strip truck?
Here are a couple of pics. Ratrod how do you like the tubular arm's, are they lighter than stock? I been thinking about doing something with my frontend, I like the looks of the Fat Man kit, but I want to keep my 5x5 pattern and same width.

Yes, the tubular arms are lighter than the stock arms. Not sure how much though. They are Chisholm arms and are good quality.

Re: wheels and tires 72 swb road and strip truck?
They are made out of 2 sets of tubs cut and welded together, had them done at the local body shop. Truck is slowly becoming more strip than street, so I wasn't to worried about hiding it, some day plans include an aluminum bed floor. Here is a old engine pic, the motor is now pulled and a new BB 489 stroker is being built. I'll post pics as soon as it is done along with dyno sheets, shooting for over 650 hp and over 640 torque, on motor.

I had it out 2 times in the fall and with the old motor no nitrous ( BB 396 ) ran a best of 12.94 at 102.3mph around 2000 above sea. Never had a chance to run it on nitrous, had a link bar come off a pair of roller lifters and took out my cam. I race at SIR in Saskatchewan Canada, I'm hoping to run in the 11's on motor next year. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Re: wheels and tires 72 swb road and strip truck?
id like to fit either a 29x15.5 or 31x16.5 on a stock width (70) rear end in a 12 inch wide rim, is this possible? Thats with a 6" drop in the back. Id like them to tuck in the wells nicely and obviosly not stick out.

Not without cutting, minitubing and narrowing, even with a 7-8" backspaced rim, I would be very surprised if it fit.

Re: wheels and tires 72 swb road and strip truck?
I think they are around 12", maybe someone with stock ones can measure for you, I never did before I had them done. Mine go to about 3/4" away from the frame rail now. I'm sure they would be more than wide enough for you stepside.
