olds motor swap

hello all

ive decided to put some olds power in my truck

455 into 86 k10 truck
id like to know has anyone done this before and what motor mounts and frame mounts will i need to use. i have some from a Firebird. i also plan to use the 700r4 rebuilt with a shift kit. this truck is gonna get driven and its also a plow truck tow rigg and pretty much everything truck.. everyone tells me the 700 wont last behind that big block.
but no one can tell me WHY! i wont be beating the crap out of the truck i just want some TOURQE and with the 373s it should pull stumps
and if anyone has a oe adapter plate for a bop to chevy i could use one!

thanks to all

Re: olds motor swap

I dont know anyone who has done this but have seen late 70's diesel trucks converted to gas . The diesel was olds 350 based and an olds gas engine was the gas engine of choice once the diesel was dead . If you could find one in a junk yard , that should provide you with the mounts , etc to allow you to bolt it in . Frank

Re: olds motor swap

the 700 will not physically bolt up to a BOP engine you must use an adapter plate to make that part work as far as the starter goes i may be put on either side of the trans as they are notched for such.

finding those 5.7 diesel truck are like finding a needle in a haystack. whats make it worse is that there are no"GOOD" YARDS in my area. i keep looking thou hoping to find that needle

I done it about 8 years ago. It's been a very enjoyable swap.

Re: olds motor swap

Yes still have the 208 and like it fine, they are a good case just keep them full of oil in fact it's a good idea to add a little extra. The way I done it was to back the rear wheels up on ramps and then fill it up. The reason is they have an oil pump on the output shaft and the level needs to be high enough to keep oil to it. Oh filling it to the plug is fine too but I like that little extra cushion. When I done the swap my truck had around 170,000 and still had the original trans. Now it's got 235,000 and still the original trans.

Re: olds motor swap

Oh it's everything from a daily driver to on occasion doing some towing, only wish I had a snow plow for it. All I did for mounts was take what I call the mount stands from a V8 car of about 74 vintage. First I took a bare block so as to not be to bulky and after installing the B&M adapter plate, bolted it to the trans so I knew where the mounts needed to be and with the mount stands attached to the motor mounts just lowered it onto a piece of 1/4" plate that is bolted with the bolt holes for the Chevy mounts, then mark and drill hole for the Olds mount stands. I'll try and get a pic or 2 of it all so you can kind of see what I mean. It all fit in very nicely even though the starter is on the opposite side, I just took the main harness and separated the wires and rerun then so they looked pretty decent. I drove it up until about 2 years ago with the factory 3.08 gears and got along great, then wanted to try deeper gears just to see the difference. the way it is now it has a ton of pulling power and can still go as fast as needed on the road, I've been very happy with it. As far as the no spin axles, well let's just say that makes it a real 4X4, very nice indeed.

this will be a spring project for me and im gathering parts still.. i looking at a powertrax for the rear and lateron down the road a lsd for the front then all probably got to a 285/75/16 tire for a little more height but the truck will be a hell of a tow rigg by then!.. btw do you know where i can find the schematic and harness to convert the truck to a 7 round trailer plug? then i can use my prodigy

Re: olds motor swap

Yes I will try to get you some in the next day or so. I don't have a first class camera but i'll do my best. Oh and don't listen to these ( better not use that word) who say the 700 will not hold up behind a big block. Most of there durability is up to the builder and IMO not just any know it all off the street can do a proper job of building one. I've been toying with them for going on 20 years now and have had very good luck with them and never stop learning new things that work and don't work.

Re: olds motor swap

2004R will bolt right up to the motor and can be built just as strong as a 700, but 1st gear isn't as low.

If you want to go through the trouble of an odd motor swap, why not do a Cadillac 500 ? The high nickel content in these blocks mean the will last a VERY long time and you often find them with the original cross hatching and no ridge in the cylinder bores. You can pick up a rebuildable 472 or 500 at junkyards for very cheap.

If you stay relatively stock with just small upgrades the it'll be just as cheap as any other engine rebuild. You get MASSIVE low end torque that will move your truck down the road and get great gas mileage, even while towing. This torque will also be great off road.
