of the steering column. THe piece that connects the steering box and goes towards the firewall. Is there a way to take out the play, mine seems to have a lot of slop. Unless this is normal..

Yes, there are acouple of articles linked in threads here. Look a couple pages back. I haven't done it myself (but need to!). It's 4 bolts but getting to them seems to be the trick.

There are the 4 bolts that Army Dude talked about. These are bolted to the ragjoint. I've tried to find a replacement at stores but no luck. The universal setup in the HELP! section didn't even work. If you can get a dealership to work with you on fidning the part you might be able to find on there and replace it.

Re: anyone ever grab their shaft.....

Still ava from the dealership. I replaced mine in the 79 years back. The 73 to 77-8 crowd will have problems as they switched to a double d connector at the bottom of the steering column from the splined version used in the older trucks. Not sure but either I-DID-IT or somewho doesn't come to mind right away makes replacements that have ujoints at both ends and do away with the rag joint. While its apart you might want to check the lower column bearing just behind the metal cover held in place with a spring clip...their famous for being short a ball or two.
