A/C questions

Anyone have a picture of the front of the engine with the A/C compressor mounted and the placement of the hoses? I am adding A/C back to my '85 and want it to look neat as possible. Everything seems to be there except the compressor I just bought. Does anyone know the belt that I should use since I am adding the compressor? This 350 does not have a smog pump. Thanks for all the great info that everyone provides here!!!

There are 23 photos of my A/C brackets and stuff. Just keep changing the file name in your browser to see all 23 files (ac1.jpg, ac2.jpg, ac3.jpg...). I recently found out that the bracket that mounts to the head had a broken ear, so your might look a little different. These are several year old, but nothing has changed except for the broken bracket.

PM me if you don't understand how to see all of the photos.

For the belt, I just use whatever the auto parts store says I need. I can get the number for you if you need it. BTW, I don't have a smog pump either.

Re: A/C questions

The pics noted should help a lot.

As for the belt, I had found with mine that you may need to just play. Get to know the parts store very well and they will let you take a bunch of belts and test them out. Try some of them and keep the ones that fit and take the others back.

I had an 82 that use to be a diesel. The guy before me put a 350 gas in. None of the belts for a gas fit. I'm not sure what that guy did, but I finally got everything to work after just trying many different belts.

Good luck!

Re: A/C questions

They are common in junkyards. I replaced my broken A/C bracket and a cracked power steering pump bracket 2 weeks ago with junkyard parts.

Re: A/C questions

looking through ebay i found a guy selling a set of brackets to mount the a/c compressor. Looking at that and the pics earlier i figure i am missing two brackets. the first is the bracket that goes on the studs on the exhaust manifold and the other is a hook shaped deal. Anyone know where the hook goes? I figure it ties the adjustment bracket to the intake....??????

Do you have a pic of the hook shaped bracket?

Re: A/C questions

Here's a picture for some brackets I found on ebay. As I mentioned I am missing the hook shaped one and the one that bolts to the exhaust manifold studs. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1985-...spagenameZWD1V
Thanks

Re: A/C questions

EDIT: I just realized that the two brackets on the left are probably the two that mount directly to the front and back of the compressor. The provide the pivot points and the spot that you put a 1/2" drive ratchet into when you adjust the belt. They don't look familiar because I only worked with them once when I replaced the compressor a couple of years ago. Here is a pic of them:

http://slonaker.net/images/truck/ac_brackets/ac3.JPG

My setup uses a brace (which I don't see here...) that goes from the top of the bracket on the upper right (in the ebay pic) to the intake. It is just a piece of tubing that is angled and flattened on each end. You can barely see it in pic #2 of my brackets.

That ebay set is also missing a small bracket that connects the big bracket on the top right (ebay pic) to the intake manifold. It also doubles as a lifting point for the engine. You can barely see it in pics 15 and 16 on my site.

I think I would want both of them. The R4 compressors in these trucks tend to vibrate and make an annoying moaning sound (Chevy will sell you a new style clutch that will fix the problem...) even when all of the brackets are hooked up. Mine moans less now that I relaced the broken bracket, so I suspect it would vibrate and moan a lot if it was missing the two braces on the top bracket.

Good luck
