decode my 6 cylinder engine

It is a post emissions engine with HEI and is said to be a 292? The number on the block is FO430TAJ. The mortec site only covers V-8s. Any ideas on where to go?

My books show TAJ used on 1973 250CI inline 6 cylinder. The 292ci motor has staggered motor mounts where as 250CI motors the motor mounts are straight across from each other. The 250 valve side covers are approx. 4" high compared to the 292 having 6" covers on the side.

Hollanders also shows it could be a 1979 truck 250 with a 2bbl carb.

Theo, I could be wrong naming it a 292. I based it on the fact that it looked alot different then the 230-250 CID motors that I've dealt with. Differences being the valve cover configuration and having a dual outlet exhaust manifold. It's definetely a newer motor as it has the air injection lines, EGR valve, HEI and other misc. smog equipment. The motor mounts weren't staggered so? Why not use the pressure plate, clutch, flywheel that came with it. This was going to be a temp. motor anyways until the V8 conversion, right? I can vouch for the clutch working well and not slipping if that's what your worried about. Send me a PM if you have anymore concerns
