Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

I know this has probably been asked but has anyone done it? How does it look? I am getting tired of searching for the real deal so I think I am going to buy a extra full top and cut it and find a back end from a truck cab a go to town on it. Unless anyone wants to sell a 1/2 top and I am willing to pay for it

Nice try on plugging a 1/2 top, it has been discussed many times
on here, but nobody has tried it, or is willing to admit they tried, have
a extra full top here just for that idea, but it may go w/ the 2wd if it
gets sold this month, whoever & whenever it gets done we need pic's.

If I can't find one in a month or 2 I am going to try it. I am not going to be happy until I do this and the bed cover. I am lucky my old man is one hell of a body man and I have a very good freind that owns a rod shop that can give me help and pointers. I guess we may end up and see.

Sounds like your gonna have to do it twice When you get finished w/
yours I'll drop mine off to have it done, and then we will both have one.

I have the perfect solution! I have an old top that is begging to be cut up. I will let you have it, fee of charge, for a full top in perfect condition.

Re: Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

Ive cut one in half before. Looks like crap. I left it open in the back. Only way to look right would be to put a back on it but that seems pretty hard.

About the only way it could be done to look right is with the back of a truck cab. It would be a pian and a lot of work but I think it would be worth it in the long run.

Anything is possible with enuff skill and a little vision. i can see it done in my head so it will be. gonna do the same thing with the top i have cut up. good luck on yours just dont give in to the norm. i plan on taking the blaz top and the truck tops and making a mould of sorts and some fiberglass sheets and make it happen. check with a company called www.fiberglast.com

Re: Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

How much interest would there be in having them reproduced? They seem to be a hot commodity. How much would you be willing to pay? What is the average market value on used ones? I don't have one as of yet, but I might consider looking into reproducing them if the interest was there, since I have a '69 K5 myself.

Re: Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

Reproduction cost would be high. I believe there are 1 or 2 guys out there making them but they are going for around $1000. Most of us are cheap.

Re: Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

Call me crazy, but I was just going to cut the A-pillars off of a truck cab and use the roof/back of it as my 1/2 top.

So how would you seal out the water? Windows roll up into the doors on a truck but roll up into the top on a blazer.

Re: Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

I'm thinking of welding in the door window frame onto the cab, and then figuring out how to put the weatherstripping onto that. Also, I'd have to shave the drip rail off the front so the line looks right. I also plan on welding some brackets on the inside to use the Blazer L brackets to hold the top on.

In the back, I'll bolt it to the bed rail (1 on each side) and then figure out how to bring it down to the floor.

I haven't started into this yet, so most of this is still in my head. I've got 3 cabs to work with, so if I screw it up/need extra parts, I should be good.

I'll be sure to post the progress when I start (probably next summer).

So does anyone have pics of a fiberglass top that has been cut? I've been thinking about trying it and would like to see how bad it would look

Re: Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

i have always wanted to cut a metal top off and make it removable too, i though about using the in half of the window trim and weld it to the top. cut a 0* over the windsheild and under the rear window and weld in flats with a 1/2" x 1/2" bar to locate and seal with a 1/2" channel in the top.

here is one that came up this morning

Re: Has anyone made a 1/2 top from a full top?

If I was really motivated to figure out how to make a fiberglass mold then I bet it could be done nicely. That pic saved the top for now...

I had a cut half top and threw it away last year when I got the real deal. I was ugly with no back.

Even the bowtie shape in the window is backwards.

I thought something was odd, but didn't figure it out. I guess if you look at it from the interior mirror it's right, hehe

Nope... it will still be backwards when looking at using the rear view mirror.
