Crate motor in a Blazer

Anybody ever bolt one of these 260 HP stock crates in a Blazer? Am going to do this hopefully soon and want to know what problems/issues you had. Did the ramhorns bolt up, brackets etc, etc. Since I bought my two wheeler without an engine and tranny, I am buying everything with the intent of it looking factory when I get done. The description Jegs has is "fits most vehicles from 1970-85". Just checking here first to see if its true. Thanks.

My buddy bought a crate motor for his '66 3/4 ton 4wd long bed. It bolted right in without any problems. It was just the base $1300 long block with tin, not anything preformance oriented.

That's the exact one I have and it's a perfect fit. You won't have a single problem, the only thing I wish was different is if it came with a oil filter adapter. I scrapped my old motor and didn't even think to remove it only to find out that there almost forty bucks ( i'm young and poor so everything adds up ). Anyways good luck with it, i'll add the link to my blazer cuz I have pics of the motor in it.

you will be disappointed with the power. I was. I would spring for something beefier if I were you. If you don't care about power then its a great deal.

I boughta crate motor for my blazer the 260 horse version and the power really sucked.... I added some 202 heads,crane cam and lifters and a holley intake and edelbrock carb... Runs really strong now and have never had any issues with the motor..

Since we are talking about the GM crates, any new opinions on their 290 Hp? I know I asked once in a thread about a year and a half ago. Jeg's has a kit to put an Edelbrock intake, 600 card, and BS on it for just over $2k. I really don't want to buy a brand-new engine and have to mess with changing heads and cams, I'd rather just bolt it in a go.

The 290HP is the same as the 260HP motor just with the L-82 camshaft. The 290HP has less low end torque and it's doggy in a heavy truck. A friend of mine ran the 260 HP one in his Nova and it only put down 180HP. Most people that buy either engine end up putting a different cam and other things that cost $ to make um run better so my suggestion is to invest in a better performing engine from the get go.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm just looking to build it back stock except for a few factory upgrades, so the 260 horse version will have to do. $$$$$ is the biggest concern so its all I can afford.

Did all of the stock brackets, especially the 69-72 power steering stuff work on these blocks when ya'll did the install?

A friend of mine just turned over a vortec headded 355 for 1200 and it runs real strong at least 300 HP and 360ish FT LBS

I got that engine from summit for $1299, just find someplace with a better price and they will match it. Everything bolted right up, just remember to install the ps bracket before putting the motor in, and plug the dipstick hole you dont use with the included plug.

I have that engine and I absolutly love it. I did change out the CAM though. I can get the specs of that when I get home. I could have gone with a more expensive motor with more HP, but I decided that I wanted fuel injection instead, so the rest of my money went towards a Holley Pro-Jection on an edelbrock manifold. I already had custom exhaust with headers. I have no idea how much HP it is making now, but it is ballsy.

It'll fit with no worries, but won't make power where you want it. Most of the GMPP engines are set up for power at higher RPM - the 290 has a pretty flat torque curve (good), but it's flat at ~300 ft/lbs (not so very good). The HP peak is at 5000...so again, not a great fit for your truck. A cam swap will take care of a good bit of that, but it's 8.5:1 which leaves a lot of power on the table. Completely understand money being the guiding factor, but I would take time to swap out for a good RV cam - reasonably cheap and not much work while it's on the stand.
