whats needed to swap from P/S to manual?
ok yeah i know a bunch of people are going to complain about this but i was wondering what is needed to swap to a manual box on my truck. i have all the power steering stuff(box, hoses, pump, and a couple brackets) but i want a manual box. I was wondering what besides a manual box will i need? are pitman arms the same? anything else different?
Thanks for the input everyone!

Re: whats needed to swap from P/S to manual?
All you need to do is box up all of your power steering stuff including the pulleys, send it to me, I will send you my manual box, and provide free tech support !!!
Really it should be pretty straight forward. I think the pitman arms and rag joint is differnet between manual and power, so get a manual box with both attached, and just bolt it in.

Im with you 71Rat. I just dont need the power steering, Its robbing horsepower!! =) It has been on my list, to revert to manual.
Are the manual boxes getting rare? Or still available rebuilt? J ________ BustyBiGurl Last edited by Jayss109; 04-27-2011 at 11:43 PM. |

Re: whats needed to swap from P/S to manual?
IMO, the manual steering box in these trucks suck. it's probably due to the weight, but it's a PITA just getting around. I have other cars with manual steering, so it's not an issue of being lazy.
If you do a quick search, Shifty has recently posted a walkthrough to convert to power, you can just use it in reverse. I have a brand new power steering setup for my truck, so if anybody wants my box and pitman arm, let me know, I've even got a box to ship it in. It's going to the scrap heap otherwise.

I believe you would want to go back to the larger steering wheel also, otherwise the effort to turn will be much harder.

Re: whats needed to swap from P/S to manual?
jayss109- the boxes arent getting rare they are the same box from 67-87 to the best of my knowledge but thats not saying much, and yes taking up to much horsepower since im building this truck to drag race on a budget, even thinking of building a custom rack set up... who knows
brak- i would be interested in the box but shipping alone on it will probly be about the cost of a new box for me. maybe someone else will be interested thanks everyone for the help

Re: whats needed to swap from P/S to manual?
I would like to try one with a freshly rebuilt manual some time. Either the bottom bushing wears out and takes the seal, or the seal goes and all the grease comes out. Years of use without grease and they get pretty messed up inside.
