Patch Panels revisited..

['72 Chevy Suburban]

I searched the archives and learned a lot on this subject, but have a few additional questions regarding my '72 Burb:

1. Is the Passenger side front rocker the same for a Suburban, as compared with the Pickup? For some reason, I was thinking that the 'Burb rocker was shorter because of the 3rd door.

2. What should I do for the Driver Side patch that I need in front of the wheel (below)? Should I use a bedside or form a piece of metal, of which I have no experience. I think that the wheel arch on the Passenger side will cover all of the rusted areas.



I was happy to see the post from Liz about GMCPaul's 10% Off Sale as I am in the middle of putting together my Christmas Wish List for the Patch Panels.

This is my first attempt at welding on sheetmetal so am open to any suggestion on marking off the cut lines, cutting, etc. I do have a panel flanger that I hope to use on this project and I should be able to cut the panels off at my buddy's house as he has a plasma cutter.

on my 68 burb the front doors rocker are the same 39"(i checked the part # and they are the same as the pickup) but the third door is only 33".

i would try to find a quarter panel patch, but thats just me

It's ironic that you replied, because my kids have affectionately nicknamed my 'Burb "The Pickle" in all of it's greenness. I have had many classic cars and trucks but they love "The Pickle" and will never let me even consider selling it.

I will check out So. KY Classics and compare pricing amongst the suppliers.

I would recommend butt-welding your new panels in instead of using the flanger. Overlapping the metal just gives the rust a new place to start.

72 chevy suburban, that is how i got my nick name, 1st time my granddaughter seen it she said wow look at mamaw's Pickle Van. everyone called me pickle van for a long time and now just Pickles, i even get mail address to Ms Pickle Pulley. i guess i will have to always keep my ole burb too.

Wow, what a great thread, Rob... I really appreciate your taking the time to take pictures and document the work along the way. Without a doubt, I have a better idea of what I will be getting myself into {Scaratches Patch Panels off of Christmas List and inserts, Ties, Socks and underwear}

I also have a "soft floor" near the DS Rocker, so I imagine that had better take a close look at that area as well. I think that I know what I am going to find...

Thanks for the compliments. You might as well repair it all at the same time. Mine was supposed to be "rust" free. It was until I started looking. Oh well, I had never done rockers and floor pans before, so I got to practice.

In case you weren't aware, the burb pass front rocker is burb specific. The pickup rocker can be used but will have to be modified. You will need the part from your original burb rocker that attached to the B pillar and that will need to go onto the p/u rocker. For the lower 1/4's infront of the wheel arch's, you can use the blazer lower front patch's as they have the correct shape at the bottom. The LWB bedsides are shaped differently at the leading edge of the opening(sorta rounded instead of squared off). Blazers, burbs & SWB p/u have the same rear wheel arch... If you need floor braces, the front ones are the same as p/u but that's it. The one's by the b pillar are different...
