My mechanic is telling be that I need new/ replacement drum brake backing plates, trouble is we can't seem to locate them anywhere. I have tried the usual suspects CPP and LMC, Summit and Jegs with no luck. Any suggestions? This is for a '72 C10.

i work at autozone and can check if we carry them for your tomorrow. if not, junkyard's gonna be your best bet. chris.

According to AutoZones web site there arn't any available for a 72 C-10.

why would you need new backing plates??? its a no wear item.

Thanks guys,

I appreciate the input. As I understand it backing plates are a no wear item, but 35 years of service tells me differently, donno why it's just one of those things...

ok so why are wanting new ones?

do you just want new look or is there actually something wrong with them?

To answer T77's question. Here is the picture of the part that I need. I can not vouch for the history of my trucks braking system for the past 35 years, it would ssem to me that at some point the drums were serviced and the backingplates were not correctly reinstalled. They are worn, pitted and have lost physical material. I understand that backing plates are a non perishable part, I'm just looking for 2 new ones or 2 that are in good conition.

When people don't put grease on the rub spots, the shoe can rub right through. I'm willing to bet, most of us actually have the wear marks on there... it tells you where to put the grease.

If you can't locate any good ones, then see if your mechanic... or another one... can weld the hole shut. Shouldn't take more than a nr... maybe 1 1/2 hr labor to build it up and grind it smooth

You can also use backing plates from a newer truck. I used backing plates and new internals for an 81 GMC. Bought 4x4 drums from same year to keep 6 lug on my 69. They are bigger/better and now cheaper to do brake jobs.

I weld up the rub spots ALL THE TIME. Hit 'em with the wire feed and then my air sander--takes maybe 15 minutes per backing plate
